pears wip

Hey all
Been working on this painting of some pears that are jumbled up together. I just showed it to my hubby who said he couldn't tell what it was until I told him. Is he just being an oaf, or is it really that hard to tell what it is? Be honest, I really need to know. Sometimes I know either one of us can be a bit (or alot) off kilter.
Thanks

Re: pears wip

It is unclearand the squiggley lines don't mean much, I would suggest paint one pear at a time, taking your time to get it right before moving on to the next one.
Follow your reference carefully to get the details.
Remember..."paint what you see, not what you think you see".
Good luck

Re: pears wip

Hey Paul
Thanks for the response and comments. When I had asked my hubby what was wrong with it, he said he didn't know.

I have been doing one pear at a time, but I see what you mean about the squiggly lines part of it being unclear. I was trying to pull off the mottled effect on the pears, guess I need to work on it more.

Thanks!

Re: pears wip

i think you picked a difficult reference...it may be easier of the stalks were clearer.

Re: pears wip

if the stalks were clearer..i meant. you need more layers of paint on this and be careful not to lose light. the shadows are good

Re: pears wip

Hey Brenda - I will give that a try. I was looking at that as well, so I'll get back to work. Thanks!

Re: pears wip

OK, hubbies do not seem to be on the same wave-length as we are, but often they are our best critics. I think you should paint a pear in the basic colour that it is(adding darks and lights to show shape and shadows)then just suggest a few tiny marks (just specks). The eye of the viewer will then relate to the object and fill in the gaps that you have merely suggested. Take a look on the internet punching into say Google the words. 'Pear paintings' and see which ones you really think are attractive. This is a very good way to learn. Most of all enjoy the process and keep practising. Maybe the old man will have no problem recognising your next attempt. By the way the middle one is a perfect pear shape - just needs a little stalk.
