Saluki Dog ~ FINISHED

Have decided to do another small piece and do it as a WIP, I'm keeping them small as there is much more chance it will actually be finished!

It's 7 x 7 in total, so the face is quite small, but am pleased with the detail I'm getting so far. Thanks to Crias for the ref photo from the wc library.

Paper is Daler Rowney Murano pastel paper, similiar to mi teintes, but a little less textured - a dark beige colour. I will probably do a background in pastel.

Lovely detail for such a small area, like the soft quality of your colors. I'll have to look into that brand of paper. Always good to see your work here.

Thank you for showing the colors in the ear to get your darks. Most interested in thinking outside the box to put life into my colors.

Re: Saluki Dog-WIP

This is todays work on this, about 2.5 hours - I'm really enjoying this little piece now which is great, black fur is fun to do....

Thank you Rob, Nelvia, Clydeine & Karen

Re black, I always use purple and blue pencils in mid to dark shades for underpainting, and do a couple of heavy layers of black pencil over them. I'm using prisma blue slate and some cloud blue for the highlighted parts. Now that I have uploaded this, I see lots of revisions needed - always the way

You've really captured the elegance of the saluki. I love the colors you are using. I love doing black also. I really love this one and the color of the background as it is, looks very complimentary to the dog.

Beautifully done. Thanks for sharing how you do your deep colors. Even though this is small, you have indicated clearly both the anatomy of the dog and the way its fur lies. Good job!

Re: Saluki Dog-WIP

Very beautiful so far.
I love Salukis and used to show them in conformation.

I was thinking of trying the Murano paper, how do you like it for CP's?

Re: Saluki Dog-WIP

This is georgous. I have used pastel to highlight or (shame) correct parts of CP painting but never thought to use it for background. Looking forward to how this finishes. Thanks for sharing receipt per one of the thread suggestions your black is the start of my book (will see how long that lasts).

Re: Saluki Dog-WIP

Thank you Peggy, LLJ, John, Nelvia,Angela, Sean & Karen!
John, I'm enjoying working on this paper so far, but like most pastel papers, it doesnt take that many layers and the tooth does fill quite quickly on this, it has a nice smooth feel though, so its easier to fill in the specks more than mi teintes, and there are some really nice colours also.....

Some more done, there is always a fine line with cp I find, between getting the darks dark enough while still keeping ligher areas for your highlights, as light colours dont go very well over darks.....
