Land Camera

I have been dealing with angst about loving realism and the linear and my attraction to the painterly. So.....I am working this out with a kind of experiment. A work in progress, the left pinecone is not quite done, but I need help with the direction I am going in....good idea?? The frame is also the painting.

14x17 acrylic on watercolor paper.

Derek

Re: Land Camera

Well, this is fantastic!

I wouldn't have angst if I were you, since you are obviously quite able to paint both in a tighter, more linear fashion as well as a more painterly one. Most of us struggle with one or the other and master neither!

Normally I would say not to mix the two styles, but this is one way to do it in a create, imaginative way! An extremely successful experiment!

Re: Land Camera

I am very attracted to the idea of mixing and matching styles. I think it may be a good basis for a series of paintings. Mixing styles adds interest in your "Land Camera" piece, through complexity in the composition. In this piece, the painterly qualities seem to dominate, as the picture in the background is the largest element. You might explore pushing the idea in a second painting by making the dominant element realistic and linear to see if it changes how the painting "reads." Lastly, you might explore morphing from linear/realism to a more painterly style within the representation of the same object. Alternatively, you might explore this treatment with a sweep of objects from left to right, making each object less realistic and more painterly as the series within the painting progresses. I enjoyed seeing this piece and look forward to more.

Re: Land Camera

Agree with Sandra - can lead to other paintings. A lovely mix of styles. And a good, solid theme to this one.

If I was being picky, I would say make the painting even more painterly, to contrast with the realism.

Brilliant idea and I love Sandra suggestions. This could be a fun series and you move from one extreme to the other!
