Re: When I was a boy

Wonderful painting Jim.

Wow!! you're a h*ll of a lot younger than I am.

When I was a kid. If I heard an airplane (all piston) I would run out of the house to look for it.

Our air mail service was an airplane dropping packages on a hillside above my house and coming back around with a line and hook down to snag a package hung up between two poles.

Hi Hal, next you'll be telling me that when you joined, Pontius Pilate was still a Navigator.

Re: When I was a boy

I remember that era Jim - my Dad pointing to the howling , whistling shapes in the sky and telling me "that's the future Neil".
We still had Spitfires and Lancs doing gunnery training up above when I was about 4 - 1948 ish.

Re: When I was a boy

Hi Neil, I seem to remember the Vampire had a Whistling sort of whine sound and the Meteor a more throaty sort of roar.
Both were still flying when I joined the RN, (1958) and we operated Sea Venoms when I was in Eagle and Victorious.

An enjoyable painting Jim, and a simpler time.
