On the Ready

16 x 20 pastel on board. Used 4 ref photos to do this. I get much satisfaction for doing that, but not sure it makes for the best paintings. However, it allows me to tell whatever story I wish.

The horse and rider was from Kort Duce photo from June monthly challenge. Thanks Kort. I changed the forearm and rope, which required another ref photo. Then I had a photo for guidance on clouds, then another to help with the cows.

cc welcome

Re: On the Ready

Ron, you get better and better with each painting you do. What a stunner this is! It's got to be my new favorite of yours. The depth, the colors, the pleasing composition...this one has so much going for it. Excellent work on this. Really excellent!

Re: On the Ready

Ron I think it worked fine comp wise. I like how you mimicked the sky pattern in the grass. Makes everything work. Love the story and how you told it

Re: On the Ready

This is beautiful. I really like the color palette, your handling of the grasses & what a great job you did combining 4 pics. Everything works beautifully.

Re: On the Ready

Thank you all. Glad it came together. The "ugly stage" in the beginning was a tough one, I almost scrapped the painting, but glad I stuck with it. Learned a lot from this one.

Re: On the Ready

You are welcome Ron. Glad I could help. I think this turned out great! (I almost thought it was digital). Combining several pictures for reference shows how you use creativity to tell a story. Keep up the great work!

Re: On the Ready

Ron, I would not have known you used different references in this composition. So, way to go! I like the colors.

Ron - amazing use of multiple refs - not easy to do. Love the palette.

Re: On the Ready

Ron, this is a very strong painting! Being primarily a landscape painter, I particularly like your handling of both the sky and the ground. Well done!
