Melody....I don't know....lol...was TRYING to draw my daughter, but the first two tries were a bust, to say the least. I can't really blame it on bad refs...just bad drawing skills...sigh. Thanks!

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

Melody and Kathrin, I love your dogs! Looking at them makes me wonder whether I should present my piece - it's definitely a work in progress...
So I take my heart into my hands and bite on the bullet:

Painted on watercolour paper. It is the very first beginning of another voyage into the wonderful land of acrylics, full of experiments.
Critique and comments are highly appreciated!

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

THANK YOU Melody!!
Yes it is in town here... our town of Okeechobee is on the Northern most tip of the BIG LAKE OKEECHOBEE...
if you look at the florida map you see mid state towards the south a BIG LAKE...
yup thats it.. looks like a hole in the state. its huge!,
45 miles wide in each direction. takes an hr to get to the southern tip of it from here.
We have a large sandy parking area by the PIER (seen in the photo) alot of fishing and sightseeing done here...
unfortunately the lake is very very low and alot of the tall grass around the edges is now marshy land more visible..
alot of airboating/boating and fishing done in the Big lake, nationally known for the fishing/bass tournaments held in the lake here.
AKA BASS Capital of the country!

Ulla, Love the blues, Nice fishie, all depends on how much detail or loosness you want to show..
each on of us have different techniques and styles.
what makes us all unique. watch the background when you paint around your subject..
I'd suggest you paint background first before the subject then you dont get a halo effect around it..
also can show the flow of water too in this case.
appears as the water is flowing around him.
Anxious to see where you go from here.. all in what you want to portray.
Looks good so far!!

Kathie, that clay pot work in progress above is lovely! We live in Arizona, and that one so perfectly captures the color of an Arizona sunset. There is nothing like the colors of our sunsets here, they can take your breath away. If you haven't experienced one, it's hard to imagine what they are like, but Kathie's painting can give you taste!

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

Ulla - love the fishie. I would agree with Kathie in terms of background - I almost always totally finish my background before I do the subject in the foreground, so that one is literally on top of the other. (Usually I paint the background a bit bigger than it needs to be, so there is a slight overlap.) I think it's great that you're experimenting and working with acrylics; I've been thinking about oils for a while, but too lazy to relearn a different type of paint - so I commend you!

Kathie - Bass capital, huh?! I must tell my father. He's been known to go anywhere the fish "are". He's actually thinking of going to Florida in the wintertime (after spending some winters in Panama), so I really will tell him! Maybe you and my dad will be neighbours.

Susan - I thought they looked similar! And now that I look more closely, I can see they are the same girl. Practise makes perfect, right?!

I slacked off last night. But tonight I will work on that cat after work!! After that I'm going to do a little series of black and white paintings of historical buildings in my town and see if I can sell them to the tourists. We're now the wedding capital of Eastern Ontario, so it could work!

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

Ulla...I like your fishy!!

Well, Melody, I HOPE so....

Did a bit more...had some other things interfere with my time.... now that the sketchy part has gone, I feel like it is more in the ugly stage....but from that (if I am lucky) should come a more formed look, as I get into the shading and details. I lost some of the shadows, so am in the process of reviving them and figuring out the light sources.

New member here. I've been lurking for a few weeks, enjoying perusing all the posted artwork.

It has been a while since I painted, but I'm finishing a painting of my granddaughter's cute little backside that I started about a year ago. Unfortunately, I did not take color notes on this painting (I know better) so I've spent the last week messing with colors and choosing a palate. Browsing the WC forums has really helped with that process.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this community. I'm pretty much a beginner here to learn but I do have this advice to offer; learn from my mistake and TAKE NOTES!!!

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

Thank you all for your encouraging words and your tips and advice! In fact I did the background first, and then added the fish, but there was too less of a contrast, so I added some deeper blue around the fish in order to let it pop out more. I didn't have a plan in mind when I did the background. But I know that I have to work on the background as well as on the fishie. I've got some lighter greenish blue on top in my mind (nearer to the surface, so the sun makes it lighter), some darker blue around the fishie, but with a smoother transition, and on the bottom something in the way of green-brown with some sea plants. As I have returned to work it looks like I won't be able to work on it till the weekend, but I will post the next steps.

Re: What's on your easel, AUG 2012

Hi everybody,

Joined WetCanvas yesterday, and I'd like to share a small painting I made today.
I'm just beginning painting (and acrylics also).
This painting is on a canva panel (10" x 12" aprox.) .

Comments, sugestions?

Thanks and regards,
Ari
