Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Hello Agnes,
Very nice video, It was fun to watch ROSE painting with a Big brush. I love ROSES. This would have been very valuable and good practice to improve my skill with a big brush!
Well, This time I have prior commitments to take care of.
Can't wait to see THE ROSE Gallery on 25th of Aug as well.

Thought someone may like this - Gus Harper Red Roses in Utube - different and certainly big - and you could change out any part you didn't like and do over
Happy Painting

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Hi Everyone,
Well Agnes dearie I have made quite a mess so far..haha did find a decent sized brush but came to realize why it was hidden in a bucket in the closet..haha Bristle brushes make me crazy all they do is lift the dang paint well okay it's cause 'I' can't use them well, so guess I'm going to have to choose a next size down of one that is not a bristle brush if I'm going to finish what I started, I'll use the bristle brush to re-gesso the surface ...now don't yell at me it'll still be larger then my size two's and 000...
Brayer roller makes for easy peasy backgrounds tho...haha but I am having fun!! unfortunately I'm just not accomplishing much more then laughing at myself..
Hugs,
Elaine

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Hi Maureen, it's nice to be back, have settled in a house for a while, we have an adorable grandson! now I know why everybody raves about it!!
it's great to be back, I have discovered that one thing I really love and am motivated by is challenges, I do discover new stuff.
Here is my new idea I think it will work with water and watercolor pencils well too, but I am using lens cleaner(it is a different alcohol prep and readily available without nasty fumes) a makeup sponge and a roller.
no point using a coin, ours are all different, aye?
so I dampen the sponge with alcohol, then rub across it with the pencil, then transfer to the paper by blotting, or rolling across. In doing this I also discovered that if you drag the roller, rather than roll it you get real quick coverage for backgrounds, I will take this idea to my next CP work.!! thanks
but why o why did we have to do the rose????? it is the hardest flower!!!

Hi Gill - Thanks for the PM. Welcome back, it's great to have another Kiwi on the Plant Parade. You must have had a great time travelling around NZ for 4years - what a wonderful idea!...something me and my husband thought of doing but we have too many dogs and animals to leave them!

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Well Im up the creek without a paddle to... the only big brush I have is a house paint 2.5 inch I use for background blending. I thought I could use this, but no luck... did manage it for the background, but the bristle keep separating for more detailed work.. so Im going to have to go with a 1" angle shader. Ill be with Noods, making a bloody mess
I get what your trying to do Aggies, making us paint loose, so Im thinking Im going to forget references and just go with the flow...should be interesting.

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Not really sure why but I guess in my head I thought a big or bigger brush meant faster and I'm here to tell ya faster is not necessarily the answer..hahaha If I had spent just a tad more time on it I think I might not have what looks like I did it in kindergarten.... However I don't care cause I had the fun of a kid and the freedom and it was definitely nice to not be me for an hour or so....roflol. But oh my goodness haha sooooooo bad.
Hugs all round,
Elaine

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Good evening messy ones,
As I have look and read and observe other artist including "me",painting a lot ,over the years, doesnt let us escape to strive for perfection and eventually lead us to try to create the utmost exact details of what we are trying to capture,we forget the FUN,the delight of surprises of what we can do,because, usually theres the "sale" and "client" to be satisfied,or just our self hunger that we always tells ourself "this is not good enough".Studying Botanical Illustration sometimes makes me wish to just run around with a big mop dip in paint..in a big canvas,as I painstakingly inspect each details of leaf viens, and counts the sepals, dots and edges etch..how I often wish just to use a spray, and paint the wall....I call it the "Crazy-me-side" but being crazy is fun...LOL!therefore...I couldn't wait for the 25th!!
16days to go...

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Gees its quiet in here, to early for everyone to have their nose to the grindstone..
Well I have 3 nearly completed, but Im cheating.. Sorry Aggie me love, but my
1'' angle shader has a tip like my hair when I get up in the morning, shall we say ragged at the very least sooooo Ive had to alternate with a slightly smaller one with a point. How on earth do these painters work with 2 and 3'' brushes
Come on you lot, spread the word of how your going...cheers al l

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project: August ROSES
Ok - Have just completed mine...what a mess...the best thing I can say about it is, that it looks like a rose...I think.
I've used my biggest brush which is a 1and a half inch flat, soft nylon, and oh how, I wanted to use a smaller brush for detail but I resisted and now I'm not sure if it's even worth posting!
It came out a totally different shape and colour that I'd intended. But I did have fun, using a large brush for the whole painting and that was indeed a challenge. I wonder what size brush everyone else is using? It would be interesting to see?!!
I would like to try a large rose on a stretched canvas, but I'm going to be away for a few days, so don't think I'll have time to do that.
This was indeed fun Agnes! So different for me as I usually like to put lots of detail in my work, so it was a total learning curve! Thanks for the challenge.
