Mounted vs. Unmounted Lino

I've only used mounted lino blocks so far but am curious what you folks typically use. I'm interested in buying a press, and it seems that the pressmost highly recommended (Blick Econo) doesn't accommodate mounted lino blocks. Any specific pros/cons that I should be aware of?
Thanks, folks!

Re: Mounted vs. Unmounted Lino

Hi, I've never used mounted lino! Unmounted lino works just fine and the only issue is when washing it to not let the back get wet as it then warps. With regards to the Blick econo etch model II - you cant go wrong, its a lovely little machine, I've had one for 5 years and just to check set it up at its highest roller setting, there is about 25mm clearance between the blankets and the roller so that gives you an idea of how thick your matrix can be, not bad at all. I use only one thin blanket to print relief to avoid too much embossing. You could even just place a piece of matboard over the paper so that will give you even more clearance. Hope I am making sense...

Your description makes perfect sense! Thanks for the encouragement about using unmounted lino and the insight into using the Econo Etch for lino relief printing!

Re: Mounted vs. Unmounted Lino

I do like the stability a bit more of mounted blocks. If I will be hand burnishing a print then I prefer a mounted block because it's a bit easier to handle and ink since it's higher from the table. I tend to get more ink on the table and surrounding area with unmounted blocks (which could easily be operator issues).

Unmounted really does work the same it just depends on what you feel comfortable with as far as handling goes. Again, it's usually a little cheaper as well, which is always a bonus

I have always used unmounted, though I often mount it on plexiglass before I print, it makes inking and handling a lot easier. Unmounted is a LOT less expensive!

Re: Mounted vs. Unmounted Lino

Thanks for the encouragement, folks! I carved my first piece on unmounted, and I don't think I'll be returning to the mounted. Yay for saving money and space!
