It provides a base for the paint to adhere to. Rather like a very heavy duty undercoat..... usually white although it also comes in black. Thick to apply, I find it's best smoothed out with an old credit card, then allowed to dry totally then sanded for a smooth finish.

Think Artex for artists......

Firehorse-
I really appreciate the information. I was going to start a project on paper and wanted to make sure started the process right. The one thing I was mostly worried about was warping.

Gesso is something you'd use on wood, mdf, raw stretched canvas, hardboard even, but paper....? Has anybody out there used gesso on paper? [that's a serious question btw]

on another posting someone did some serious detailed work with watercolor paper but they never prepped the surface... This is a "Serious Question". LOL!
