Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

Just a gentle reminder that the Pastel 100 competition deadline is fast approaching. August 15 postmark deadline to be exact.

Anywho, I was re-reading the Prospectus and came across this puzzling paragraph and wanted to see what you all think it means:

Entries will be prejudged and finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. Award winners and honorable mentions will be selected by the jurors named above. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The jurors and editors reserve the right to recategorize the entries.

Does this mean that my entry might not even get judged by the Juror?

Thoughts? Interpretations?

Re: Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

You are correct Kathryn. They receive so many entries that to expect any one juror to look at all of them for the fee they are receiving is beyond my imagination. The magazine staff will first go through them to select those they want the "named jurors" to see. The "jurors named above" are really "judges of awards". The magazine staff are the "jurors of selection". This is not a new concept for large entry competitions. PSA uses this method for their open competition. The PSA board is the jury of selection, and they hire outsiders as the "judges of awards". I think that it is a bit confusing to use the term "juror" when they really mean "judge".

Re: Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

I can understand the logistical problem of so many entries to judge - but who are these "staff people" who are going to judge my painting? I'm glad I read the fine print.

Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

Thank you, Kathryn, for sharing about the Pastel 100. And I'm happy to clarify questions about the jurying process. Peggy has got it right. Due to the volume of entries, the Pastel Journal editorial team--myself (the editor), our managing editor, and helping this year, the former editorial director of North Light fine art instruction books) will do the pre-jurying. We then invite the category jurors to select the winners and honorable mentions from what is still a large volume of entries. It is one of the unique aspects of this particular competition, I think, that entries will be viewed by the editorial team of Pastel Journal. And I can tell you that we do make note of potential artists to feature in the magazine (whether the artists are PJ 100 winners or not)!

Hi Anne - thanks for the clarification! And I'm glad to meet "the staff" who will be doing the pre-judging - nice to know

Question Re: Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

Anne - while I have your virtual "ear" so to speak, there have been questions in the past whether paintings posted here on WC or elsewhere on the internet would be considered as having being "published." It would be helpful if that were clarified.

Work previously published in a national publication or receiving an award at a national-level exhibition at the time of submission to this contest is not eligible.

Thanks again!

I'd be very interested to know what "published" means as well, since I blog about a lot of my artworks.

Hey Angie - I guess we aren't going to get an answer from Anne. I'd love to show what I've painted on Wet Canvas, but don't want to bend the rules.

Re: Pastel Journal 100 - 2012

Sorry. Here I am! By "a national publication," we mean a printed art magazine or journal with wide circulation, as we would like the sharing of a winning entry in PJ to be the first appearance of the pastel painting in print. So, we do not mean to prevent it being shared in a blog, on Wet Canvas, etc. Although I will admit I'd be happier if it hadn't, but it isn't a rule violation.

Also, while we're talking about that particular part of the guidelines, I can also clarify the part about "receiving an award in a national-level exhibition," as we sometimes do have winning paintings that have won other awards. The rule does specify "at the time of submission." So, if a painting is entered in our competition BEFORE receiving word about having won an award in a separate contest, it remains eligible.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck to everyone who has entered or is planning to!
