Debut Image

This is the first time I've posted in this forum (I am new to WC). Image shot in Istalif, Afghanistan, Nikon D700, 24-70/2.8. Critiques welcomed.

Wendy

Re: Debut Image

What a great shot, I like the concentration on his face and the warm colors set it off beautifully.

Re: Debut Image

Composition : excellent! the use of the tall ceiling emphasizes the hidden light source. His concentration on his work is the COI (IMHO). Is he sitting in a hole?

The universality of pottery making, and the ancient history of it make this a strong work, also

The colors, as noted, are universal, earthy and calming. Great lighting, too,

BRAVO!!!

Re: Debut Image

Wendy,

First, welcome to Wet Canvas. Your first posting really grabs my interest. Having attempted pottery making using a wheel many years ago, I know how difficult it is to do and feel that you captured the intensity and talent possessed by this man. Seeing the beautiful finished product in the foreground and catching him making a duplicate bowl using nothing other than his hands and a pottery wheel, was a great capture that tells the story of how pottery is made.

The appearance of natural lighting adds to the earthen tones completing this warm composition.

Excellent work.
Please share more.

Re: Debut Image

Thank you all for taking the time to look at the image and express your thoughts. The potter is sitting in a hole of sorts and the wheel is foot-powered. This shot was made north of Kabul in a town that's known for its blue-glazed pottery. The light source is an open window (frame, no glass) and no fill flash.

Most of my camera work is underwater stuff but Afghanistan presented endless photographic opportunities. I'm not in the military; I spent a few years there doing development work and am still involved in the work but am in the Middle East right now. I'll get up some more work in the next few days.

Thanks again!

Wendy

I like it. As noted, the composition, lighting, and colors all make for a great mood to the image.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Re: Debut Image

Interesting way to throw, sitting in a "hole" I learned to throw on a kickwheel myself, many years ago. Love this image for all the attributes already mentioned. Great subject. I might crop a tiny bit off the top, otherwise, it's very good. I think natural light can make some very strong images.
