Smile Digital Charcoal Portrait

Finally found some time to complete something! This portrait was inspired by an old drawing in one of my sketchpads. It was redrawn and colored completely in Painter 5.5 using only the charcoal and eraser tools. Crits and comments welcomed.

The skin tones are great.

(This is completely invented, right?)

But I think the draping is wrong on the blouse.

Do you have Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery? If you don't check it out of the library or soemthing. The texture of the fabric looks like it's silk or rayon, it just doesn't look like it's hanging right.

Ron.

Shehaub,
Thanks! This is the result of a technique that I stumble upon while playing with Painter's brushes. I've also added some helpful references to my library. Specifically, "How to Paint Skin Tones", James Horton and "How to Draw Portraits in Colored Pencil", Lee Hammond. A little instruction can be a dangerous thing!

Ron,
Thanks! I believe you are correct on how the fabric hangs. I've been doing so many "head shots" lately that I'm out of practice in rendering clothing. I'll keep an eye out for the Hogarth book the next time I'm at the bookstore. And yes, this is an invented person, but it was based on a past conversation with a friend who was describing the "look" that he was most attracted to.

Hey,
I think any portrait which captures a certain look is a true accomplishment. Especially a subtle expression, such as this one. It is a rare ability to be able to breathe life into a face.
