I draw the buildings first. I know that I should draw the Centre of Interest first. I also know that I should 'edit' out some of the buildings but I'm still learning (and hopefully will always do so). One thing that works well for me, when I do it, is to do some thumbnail value sketches; 2x3 inches in size. When I do them first, my composition comes out better than when I don't. Advice received is to draw the abstract pattern first, then draw the main shapes. I wish I could always follow that small piece of advice.
...and yes, some simple, descriptive tutorials would be very helpful but I have yet to find a source for them. YMMV
