Smile July SW Monthly Challenge - Everyone Welcome!

Hello Artists and welcome to the July 2012 Monthly Challenge!

The Challenge is an activity thread for artists of all experience levels working from photos chosen by a monthly host.

Since this is a group activity, we can pool our knowledge and resources, and grow as artists in a fun, no-pressure atmosphere.

No critiques unless specifically asked for, Please, no harsh critique! The intent is to have fun, try new things, and experiment.

All photograph are taken by me and you can use them in any way to produce your art. I am not a photographer, but kept in mind that they would make a pleasing composition. They are also in a my gallery in a lager version.

And well here they are, I hope you all enjoy them.

And since Dallas seems to be so "in" lately and I live not too far from the SouthFork Ranch, here are some picks from it!

scatdaddy, very nice. It has just the touch of hint of form and yet we can imagine the rest. Very effective!!

These are on a white pencil test page of Utrecht Oatmeal paper.

OMG What beautiful work already posted! Scatdaddy I LOVE your horse.

Sandra, my favorite is the tractor! I have absolutely no idea how you can sketch so well so fast!

Re: July SW Monthly Challenge - Everyone Welcome!

Scatdaddy, wow! I love the impact of this. You kept it so vague and soft, and yet it is so alive! Well done!

As always, I look forward to seeing your work, Sandra. These are so great! I especially love the look of the tractor. I have two nephews who are both just crazy about tractors (they are three and four years old) and they know more about tractors than I do! Nice lines and shapes. Love the horse too as well as the barn. Great job!

Maria, Jenna, Aleada..thank you for the kind words. They're appreciated. Sandra, I always enjoy seeing the products of your creatability. I'd like to know more about the white pencil you used, namely if it is stable under fixative.

Re: July SW Monthly Challenge - Everyone Welcome!

Thank you, scatdaddy, Maria, Jenna, Aleada, for your comments.

Scatdaddy, what do you plan to use white pens on? If you plan to use it on putting whiskers on your graphite drawings, then I'd say it would not be a good idea. Graphite is a lubricant and this gel pen skips on it and it doesn't cover well unless you do it a couple of times. Then it defeats the purpose of clean thin strokes. Plus this is only a gel pen. It has a round bulby tip and the lines do not taper like dip pens do. So if it is whiskers, don't plan on it.

I've also tried dip pen with Deleter Manga white correction ink and that is too viscous and too unpredictable if I have to thin it. And it doesn't go well on graphite.

Dip pen with Dr. Ph Martin's Pen white could be your go to whiskers finishing touch. But bear in mind that because graphite has a certain texture, the ink will show the undulating grain underneath but it is still the whitest and opaque thing I've tried out of five or six types.

Uniball Signo white gel pen that I used comes in big and small size points and is very stable with final Grumbacher final fixative. It doesn't wash off or change texture or run. So is the Dr. Ph Martin's Pen White.

Here's a quick horse.
