Plein Air Competition in Midway, Utah.
I haven't been on here for a while. I've got a lot of catching up to do!
Today was the first day of painting for the Wasatch Plein Air Paradise, the plein air competition held in Midway, Utah every year. The weather was very windy and there was smoke visible from wildfires several miles away. I wasn't able to get out until early afternoon. Here's today's effort:
C & C welcome.

Very nice James. I started early in the morning, it was nice until 11:30, that's when the wind started up. This is my first time doing a plein air event, I have strong doubts I'll produce anything worthy. I'm going back out tomorrow to try and finish the two I started today, so far they are not looking all that good and I'm not sure finishing them will make them any better.

Beautiful and representative of that area. We used to camp at Wasatch State Park and these kinds of views were some of the best that the area had to offer. Good luck with the heat in the coming days.

James.. I knew you'd be up there! glad you posted your painting.
this one has nice depth, light and darks to it... you didn't say what size
it is.
I'd love to go up to the awards reception and the auction.

David, Don't worry about producing "worthy" paintings. You should have seen my first plein air event. As I remember, I was one of the worst ones there! But I was able to see my paintings side by side with the works of more experienced painters and compare how they handled certain passages to what I had done. I also got to compare the overall effect of their paintings to my lack of effect. It was an extremely useful learning experience!
Good to hear you're in the competition. You never know what will happen!

Gary, thanks. The road that goes up Snake Creek Canyon from Wasatch S. P. is a neat drive. I've never been all the way to the top but it gets you up pretty high and provides spectacular views over the entire valley.

Thanks, John. Those shadows were part of what attracted me to that scene.
I made my own shade by standing under my SUV hatchback!

Whoops! I'm always asking others on this forum for that information and here I go forgetting to do that myself! It's 11" x 14" oil on canvas panel.
Maybe I'll see you up there if I can get away from everything else!

Your blog makes me think you could. You still have a day and a half left to paint! Either way, maybe I'll see you there.
