Yes, Photoshop is great, and the new CS6 version has new possibilities in the painting area; I suspect that, in the future, I won't need Painter anymore...

in terms of bang for the buck Project Dogwaffle has always been right up there. The program has evolved way beyond just a painting program. I do not want to sound like a shill, but PD Pro 8 Howler was just released, and it looks amazing see for yourself at www.thebest3d.com/howler/8

I've thought about trying painter but have been put off by the perceived learning curve and its instability. Are any of those really an issue?
I've heard of Art Rage and the one from Japan too. How are they in terms of learning them? Are they more Painter style mixing (which I've also heard is more like traditional mixing--have not tried it tho)?

Photoshop has some really great plugins available to create alsorts of effects.
