Phi Theta Kappa membership: is it worth the $75.00 one time fee?

Does anybody know of this society? it is an honors society for 2 year colleges, of which I received an invite to join. There is a $75.00 joining fee & one does not have to participate in campus activities, which appeals to me as I dont have time for this. Members receive a stamp or seal on their diploma upon graduation, & there are scholarship opportunities exclusive to members. It is supposed to look good on a resume & help with transferring to 4 year schools. I am currently enrolled in an AA degree program in graphic design at my local community college.

Does anybody think it is worth it? does anybody think it will help someone like me going in the arts?

here is a link; http://www.ptk.org/

I know no one can decide for me, I would just like some advice & input from fellow artists, as I am a student on a tight budget.

To join you have to be a top student, don't you?

I would say go for it, Sossity. It's only $75 and it doesn't really hurt. I belong to Kappa Delta Pi which is a national honor society in education. To be honest, they really don't do much for you other than take up space on your resume. I'm not saying it isn't important but, it makes some organization some money and if they provide scholarships then it seems to be worthwhile. Also, it's an honor in itself to be invited.

As for helping you after you graduate, who knows? In my experience it didn't seem to make any difference what I had earned or what my GPA was. All that was important is whether or not I had that degree.

I was a PTK member.

It does look nice on your resume and on applications for future schooling.

A nice honour, but not devestating if you don't join.

Good job with your GPI I was a member and it didn't do me any good. I don't remember having to pay, however. If I had to decide again, I'd probably save the $75. I don't think honors like these really count, it's just a fancy way of saying that you have good grades.

Phi Theta Kappa is more than just a line item for having good grades. It is a service organization. If you go to meetings and get involved in the community, it can mean networking with other smart professionals, local businesses, and a sense of reward for helping out. Getting involved gives you access to scholarships and chances to learn leadership. My husband just bought the pin and didn't go to meetings, I think it is a shame, it is a chance to really get involved.

I never qualified for Phi Theta Kappa because I was always a part time student in community college and my university didn't have an honors organization. But I did get involved in other community service groups and it really helped me out.
