Organizing new studio; any tips for beginners?

Here must be many artists who have lots of experience how good studio is organized. I am furnishing and arranging my first 16m2 studio space. I also have tiny toilet/shower, kitchen and hall with cabinets.

My guestion is: What things you have found inportant in studio setting? I am most intressed in things that are not obvious. Things that time and experience has taught to you.

North light exposure.

LOTS of horizontal storage/drying/layout surfaces.

Cut off the phone line, build a moat, set booby traps, razor-wire, multiple bolt-locks and a big, ugly dog to discourage visitors and unwanted interruptions.

Cheap, but durable floor surface that you don't mind getting stained/painted/scarred.

Leave the internet in the house.

A decent sound system for your favorite music/audiobooks.

If I didn't rent, I'd do the moat and booby traps option. Great idea!

I suppose I can invest in a "No Trespassing" sign though.

Note: No matter how hard you try, you will never have enough horizontal surface space. EVER!

Love the moat/razor wire ideas.

I had some leftover 2' x 2' foam interlocking squares from a workshop project. Put some right in front of my easel. Sure helps the legs and feet when I'm doing a marathon painting session. They're available at any hardware store. Even Toys r Us sells them if you like yellow, red, etc.

Re: Organizing new studio; any tips for beginners?

I would start by making a list of items you want to store. Then think about how much space you need for those items. What will be the best way to store them where they are readily available?

Next would be lighting. What kind of work are you doing, and how should it be lit? I found some track lighting at Home Depot, and there's an adapter you can buy that allows you to simply plug in the lighting to an outlet. It even has its own switch at the outlet. This type doesn't require hard wiring, just an outlet.

Where do you want to work in the space?

I would measure the space and create a floor plan where you can sketch some ideas on how to layout a space. Ask a friend to help you hold the other end of a tape measure, and walk around taking the dimensions. You can then lay it out on quadrille paper, or use free drawing software like Google Sketchup to draw a plan.

The colors of the walls are important to painters, they can reflect into your painting. I don't think its too critical, but if you went with bright yellow or orange, etc. it could make a difference.

Can you give us more info on what type of work you do, then answers could be more specific?

One other thought, ambience.
You may want to create a mood with your studio, or perhaps not. I decided I wanted to create a feeling of serenity. I'm planning to eventually paint some clouds on the walls. I love painting outside, so wanted to feel like I'm outside even when I'm inside.

I like to clear out all of the stuff I'm not really using so things don't feel cluttered. Every now and then I have to purge the studio of boxes, etc.

Re: Organizing new studio; any tips for beginners?

I think studio space is constantly evolving, and no matter how well you plot and plan your space, you WILL end up changing it after working in it for awhile.

I finally have mine almost to where I love it- after nearly 10 years in this house...I say almost because I thought I HAD it, but a friend gifted me with a sink for my studio yesterday!! SHWING!! So, I have to re-arrange a bit to make it fit into the studio...I am so thankful to have it, however!!

I really like those metal shelves that you put together without tools. They are sturdy, easy to assemble, and hold a ton.

Casters and Wheels ~ as much as it is practical for you, have all fixtures easily moveable. I agree with the "ever evolving concept. Access to good music, if that is something you enjoy while "at work." Dan
