I'm enrolled in a graphic arts program in community college. My major is desktop publishing and probably web design too. But I'm adding some art and design classes to round out my skill set (not to mention just for fun!) I just finished my first design class and I'm now enrolled in Drawing I.

I go to Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids MI. My major is Fine Arts/Sculpture, and I love it! I am a "non-traditional student" (which means Im old ) but I love the enviroment in a school devoted to expressive creativity.

Hey,
I am attending Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska for undergraduate studies. Major is Graphic Design, Minor is editing and publishing. Chose that major because I have 2 kids and need to be able to find a job somewhere when I get out of school. Still get to take many fine arts classes though, like sculpture, painting, and figure drawing. Eventually plan to get my MFA somewhere.

Glad this is here!
Hello! I'm going to be a senior in high school, and I'm planning on attending art school or majoring in art. I've been interested in art since I was very young - my parents would take me to museum in a child carrier before I could walk. I was selected for an art program for "gifted" students (I feel funny saying that, for aren't we all gifted?) in elementary and middle school. During high school I've taken Intro to Art, Drawing I, Drawing II, Painting, and Sculpture. I'll be taking Advanced Art, Painting II and Sculpture II next year. Painting II and Sculpture II are only available this year because of the construction on our schools. It's to replace Black and White Photography until the photo lab is ready. And I really wanted to take that class! But I also take classes outside of school at nearby art colleges. I'm getting nervous about preparing a portfolio, and I'd really like some advice on that.

wow melancholy, your school sounds nice. my highschool doesn't have a gifted program for art, they have them for everything else though! and i'm so jealous that you get to go to an art college for classes! that's really good experience. that way you'll already know what its like. I have no idea what to expect when I go.
I'm also very nervous about preparing my portfolio. and i feel my work is kind of weak. (i've been lazy! shame on me) so I don't really think I have a winning chance.
the only courses my highschool offers is intro to art, 2D art (painting and drawing), 3D art (sculpture, 3d design), art 4 (independant study), and b/w photography. the photo class is good (but expensive) and the rest is just silly. i don't think my school takes art very seriously. i assume its because there isn't really a majority of talent in that area. we're getting a new highschool but its not going to be open before i graduate. i'm sure the facilities will improve once we get that.
advice would be nice

hello again
The gifted program is actually just for elementary and middle school kids, but it's just been cut! We have major budget problems, and the override that was going to save the high school's clubs and some sports didn't pass. So we're going to have to raise money ourselves if we want any clubs at all! Also, the art classes are going to be HUGE next year. But I suppose it's much better than many schools have, and I'm glad that they havn't cut art all together.

i wish our school had an art club. but even if we did no one would join. you see everyone at my highschool takes art, but none of them are exactly artists. none but a very few. our school is so small that everyone does the same thing. even when it comes to art. which isn't very creative at all. i've wanted to start one but i'd be too afraid that i would have a whole bunch of artist wanna be's on my hands.

art club
Yeah, I was in the art club my freshman year of high school. I enjoyed it for a while, my favorite project being painting a piece of furniture for an auction to benefit the homeless. But I felt really quite alone there. It seemed like a lot of people thought it was the craft club and not the art club (Not that I'm dissing crafts-neon pipe cleaners rock!). I didn't participate during my sophomore year. I couldn't help feeling so alone. Strangely enough, the best artistic support I found in my school's poetry club. I was the president this year . I really hope that we can continue to have meetings this year, since we never used any school money anyways .

yeah....its really funny how poetry and art goes hand in hand. i really think a poetry club would be nice. i write poetry all the time myself. i'm going to make a book and publish it one of these days...i wish the summer could last forever so i'll have plenty of time to do what i need! it doesn't help that i have to visit a whole bunch of colleges and prepare my portfolio and admissions stuff. that's beside all that i wanted to do this summer. that's the stuff i HAVE to do.

ps-there is a whole bunch of books i want to read (art instruction books, etc..) that's been sitting on my shelf for ages. but i guess you could say i'm lazy.

Im a Senior at Towson University in Baltimore MD, and I'm a Digitial Illustration major...maybe photo minor, depends on if I get all my classes to graduate on time or not. I plan on doing forensic art when I graduate, and trying to do concert photography as well.

art books
Yeah, that's the funny thing about art books. I find that I often spend more time reading about art than actually doing art, which then makes me feel kind of guilty that I'm not practising what I'm learning. But I have found that what you've read shows up in what you do, when you do it. I've also found that I have sort of an addiction to art books. It's like if I get enough art books, then I'll have a lot to read so I can avoid making art and then feeling that I'm not good enough. The whole idea of "good enough" is really detrimental, since you never are "good enough." The mindset has a lot to do with making art. When I worry about the art being "good enough" for a portfolio, it usually isn't. If I just think "Ok, it doesn't have to be anything it isn't. Just do it and enjoy it", if usually comes out well.
I'm having fun with these colors....

If you ever need more art books i HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying them from amazon instead of from a craft store or book store. They are SO MUCH CHEAPER! on amazon.com. You can even buy used books for prices lower than amazon's. Plus they always have that great deal where if you spend over @25 you get free shipping! I have made a list of books I want on Amazon. You could call it my wishlist. Yes I love buying art books, I just don't have the time to read them all! But I like looking at all the pictures and illustrations and stuff. I think instruction books are much more helpful than my art classes. But that's probably because I have never really been exposed to a good art teacher yet.
If you buy any more art books I recommend "The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study", by Kimon Nicolaides. He is an awesome art teacher and his book is awesome too. It is set up so well. It even has a lesson schedule and everything!
i am so much more satisfied with my art when i enjoy the process of making it. it doesn't matter if its good enough, if i like making it i will most likely like the finished result.

books
[color=darkblue]Oh yes, the Kimon Nicolaides book is great. I also love "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. I just got "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing" by Anthony Ryder in addition to another anatomy book I got earlier, "Anatomy for the Artist" by Sarah Simblet (beautiful b&w photos in that one). I think Amazon is really cool for checking out new books, but I've never bought anything online. My mother won't let me, plus she works at a bookstore now so she get a good discount there. The problem is that it's a nation-wide chain. Those stores can be cool because they're so big and they have so much, but sometimes that selection isn't great and they also make business hard for local places. I feel kinda guilty buying from places that help to homogenize America's taste in books. But I dunno, my family's going through tough financial times (as are so many people) and I want books. I just want. Wanting can be really embarassing. /COLOR]
