Masai Grannie - FINISHED

I tried to post this the other day but had an irritable internet. So you get two updates at once.

My brother recently returned home from some missionary work in Africa...while he was there he took a great number of photos and bless his heart, kept me in mind for lots of them. This is the first one...she is a beautiful grannie from the Masai tribe in Kenya. My brother is trying to find out her name for me, so grannie is just the working title. Here's some info he shared with me...

The Masai Tribal peoples are known as the fierce warriors of Kenya …known to take down Lions with just a spear-it’s the entrance into manhood for the young warriors…or at least it was. This generation has left that ritual behind as Lion populations dwindled. Masai are a nomadic tribe who basically go where their herds can find food. But these two groups have a much smaller area that they travel these days (100s of sq kilometers rather than 1000s). Many things are changing for these colorful people as they are beginning to school publically and are influenced by western TV and Media. But it’s a slow process…these folks have lived the same for more than 6000 years of recorded history.

I was going to keep this as my demo piece for CA but I just know I'm going to finish her and will have to start another. Thanks for looking!

I forgot to mention...this lovely lady has blue eyes! Something that is fairly rare in her tribe, I imagine and from all the photos I looked at, she was the only one with them.

Re: Masai Grannie wip

Lorna, Grannie is wonderful and I love the narrative. I wonder if the blue eyes are the result of aging and perhaps cataracts. Anyway this is a great subject and you are certainly doing her justice. Looking forward to updates.

I can see this is gonna be a wonderful piece - what a thoughtful brother to take such a great shot

A friend of mine gave me a photo of a Masai maiden which I did in acrylics a few years ago it's on my scratchboard re-do list so I can learn something here - thanks Lorna!

Wow, you have me giddy with excitement to see this come together. Can't wait to see the next bit. I met many Masai in my Kenya days so this will be a close to home piece for me.

The piece you replace her with better have lots of wrinkles! I was really looking forward to this as a demo. (though I can't complain, she is wonderful as a demo or as a wip)
You did it again! Another masterly board!

Wow...great to have the story behing the artwork! What a great story too! how wonderful to learn that she has blue eyes!!! What the heck! That would be rare. Does she hold some higher position in the village? a shaman or medicine/wise woman. Don't know much about the Masi culture really, but you would think that blue eyes would be a of sign of special powers to them. Already its looking soooo good Lorna. Like I said on fb...you inspire me!

Re: Masai Grannie wip

Thank you all for following along and your thoughtful comments!

Harry...I thought of cataracts but her eyes are so clear, especially the pupils, not that milky color typically associated with cataracts. I have left them fairly light here because I think I will color them.

Pamela...I'll see if I can find out, it wouldn't surprise me, if she was. Thank you.

Jenny...yes, my brother, Reverend Blake Wagner is certainly a dear thoughtful man, for many reasons.

Diana...I'll see what I can do, lol.

More later.

Re: Masai Grannie wip

There are occasional blue eyes amongst the African peoples. Not sure if thye revere them or not. I have seen blonde hair/blue eyes in the Original People of Australia.

Great work again Lorna. You are so good at smoothing out the skin and wrinkling the skin if necessary.
