Hails from England
Caravan Visitor

Joy was more than a little horrified to find this fellow clinging to the caravan window alongside her bunk when she openned it. Needless to say I had to make sure he was safely removed once he had been photographed (Unharmed, I hasten to add).

A very fat spider, Alan. It's the window that he's hanging from - as Rob said, much to my horror. All I wanted him to do was get rid of it but all he wanted to do was take photos!!!

Well personally I was expecting to see a cute little birdie, or some such thing, bit taken aback by the spider. I think it might definitely be an idea to have a 'bugs' symbol, like theres a nude symbol. Or am I just being a wimp! Needless to say, excellent photos' just wish the title had been, 'Kate, don't look at this one!'
Kate.

Oh YUCK!!! Now, don't get me wrong. Spiders are GREAT photo subjects...they don't tend to run away from me. HOWEVER, I have a HORRIBLE fear of one creeping across the ceiling while I'm sleeping and dropping into my mouth....ACK!!! I'm with Joy on this one. MOVE IT! *THEN* take the blasted pictures.

Wow! What a mixed response. Sorry to have given a few of you a bit of a fright. but unlike some of the *friends* your side of the pond I believe our spiders are quite harmless. (Not sure I believe him. (Joy))

Sorry, Mike, don't know what type of spider t is. I half hoped that Haggis would know but maybe I've floored even him with this one.

Once again, thanks everyone for your visits and comments. Much appreciated.

Yes, I am agreeing with the majority, creepy!!!

You'll have to watch out dad, you are getting a bit of a reputation for birdie pictures, as this is what I was also expecting. It's just like you to go for the picture first before moving the spider.

The pictures are lovely though. The second one is my favourite, the spider seems less intimidating.

Nikki.

Actually I was wondering myself. The stripy legs remind me of the common garden spider but it looks a bit diifferent. Best I can come up with is Araneus quadratus, a relative of the above. According to my books, the colour can vary from nut brown to bright red and mature females are siad to be grotesquely fat. Anyhow, I'm probably wrong on this one which is why I never suggested it before

Thanks for your efforts on identification, Alan. You mentioning your books reminded me that we do have a book that includes some references to spiders. Another possibiity is the Steatodea bipunctata (the book doesn't give it a common name). I say possibility because the picture looks extremely similar but is too small for accurate ident and the description says 1.2cm but I would have said that our friend was closer to 2cm.

Awww it's not that bad. At least it was outside. Or was it? I used to live in a Tarantula migration path. During mating season you can see them creeping down the road by the dozens. Imagine getting up in the morning and going to the kitchen half asleep headed for the coffee pot. Turn on the light and see one of these furry critters as big as your hand sitting in the middle of the floor.
I tell you you'd wake up the entire neighborhood.
They are quite interesting creatures tho. My kids caught a couple and studied them for a school project years ago. Quite fastidious and very curious. And I'd go so far as to say affectionate. Tho you would never have caught me letting one crawl up my arm.
