Post Is there a list of vanity galleries?

I'm getting frustrated -- I send out portfolios to galleries calling for artists based on calls for entry in respected art publications. More often than not, they turn out to be pay-for-space situations. My time and resources are wasted, because I was unable to determine whether they were a genuine gallery.
My question -- has there been any attempt to maintain a list of galleries that offer shows for payment? This list would help us filter out our choices, and might also be of use to those looking for a pay-for-show arrangement.

i think you should flat out NOT pay attention to ANY gallery that puts out feelers. that's just a cheezy way for a gallery to do business. no respectable gallery does business that way. as for shows,,,stay with shows run by organizations....{M}

I have a great list of galleries that rent wall space and have made problems for artists. Please email me the name of the gallery and I will reply

The most recent ones are Agora, Limner and Papp Gallery, all of NYC. It's difficult for people on the west coast to determine which New York galleries (some of which I have been refered to be seemingly respectable art people) are real, when so many end up to be vanities.

Someone want to take a minute and enlighten me a little? I confess that the only galleries I have been involved with all charged wall rent + commission...some only charged wall rent, and visa versa. I had the impression that was the norm - at least in my area (central Virginia). Is that what "vanity" gallery is? Thanks for any info.

Carol,
You should never have to pay to show in a commercial gallery. If you're in a coop gallery, then that's a different story. There all members are expected to kick something in something, and help out in other ways also.

Another gallery to add to the list of Vanities is :

ArtsForum Gallery on West 57th Street in NYC.

Arlene.... this was really an eye-opener for me! We have numerous galleries in the two large cities near me. I don't think I have
encountered any (other than one) that didn't charge that way.
Guess I need to really check it out more thoroughly -
One gallery that bought one of my paintings has offered to show my work, but they do want a 35% commission...think that is about average in that location. No wall rent there.
Thank you for this information .. Carol

There is a list here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_gallery
Feel free to contribute to it, but keep it formal, as it is an encyclopedia.

Re: Is there a list of vanity galleries?

YES YES YES. We definitly need a list like this and it needs to be stickied for future posts. This would be a very valuable resource for all of us, especially those of us who are only in the beginning stages of learning the business side of art.

Agora gallery - what a joke that place is.
