What's On Your Easel?....June 2012

Welcome to What's on Your Easel for the month of June 2012!

If needed, please remember to place the butt icon.

Please post your oil paintings that you are currently working on or have just finished.

Everyone is welcome to post in this thread - Newbies and experts, as long as the work is in oil paint!

For the most part, this is a “show and tell” thread, if you would like more detailed help or critiques, the main oil forum would be the place to post and ask

Re: What's On Your Easel?....June 2012

This sounds like a fun thread. Can't wait to see what projects all of you have going on.

I recently got a commission for a 24x30 painting of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix. This is a small 30 minute sketch/study I did the other day. I emailed the client (in this case it's family), waiting on a response. Then I'll get started on the big one once they approve.

Now I'm off to go stretch some canvases.

I like your painting, Matt. It captures the feel of the area nicely. I stay with my friend in AZ frequently and she has a great view of "Elephantback Mountain". I need to do painting of that next time I am there.

This is a barn I painted plein air on Wednesday at my friend's farm.

dollardays, nice painting. i like the glow behind the trees and think they work well, my favorite part being how the clouds look like clouds within clouds.

Matt, it's a really nice sketch and I'm sure your client will approve it. If they do, please try to keep the looseness in the larger work, too...tightening up sometimes kills the freshness they admire in the sketch (They might want to buy the sketch as well!).

Nora, your trees look perfect! so does the barn and since it's plein air, the freshness is so very appealing! Love it!

And I wish my trees were as satisfying as yours in my Water Nymph background; I keep feeling like I need more deep greens behind her now that I've lightened up her shadowed side. I said somewhere else that I was going to leave it alone after this last session, but I find the lack of darks in the upper left area clumsy compositionally. I might just take one more swipe at it before I give up...

It may be that the paint is still a little wet from last night...

Nancy, your instincts are good..I think the greenery should be more consistent, light or dark..leaving a soft edge on your figure on one side. Your Nymph is beautifully painted..

dollardays, very nice barn scene. I love plein air painting and barns. You captured it well.

Nice works! So inspiring to see what everyone is doing.

Nancy, personally I like the willow better than the other foliage. We had one next to our house that we eventually had to take down. What about making it bigger (they usually are quite large!) and dominate more of the background?

Nancy, I love this work! I saw her in an earlier stage with nothing behind her. When you added the willow I pondered it and thought, "Nice, now she has privacy I think you're right about balancing the greens and I think darker behind her is the right way to go. The whole work is soooo beautiful!

Nancy she came out beautifully and she is balancing perfectly, gracefully. That froggy looks very hopeful.

Re: What's On Your Easel?....June 2012

These are all very nice. Nora, your barn and trees are lovely. Nancy, your nymph is well done. I agree about the background suggestions: make the willow somewhat larger, and include shadows and darks in it. The butterfly is a nice surprise. Is she keeping it safe, or will she ffer it to that very hopeful froggy?
