Grandma's Rose
OK, we can blame Bleuie for this!! I decided to try colored pencil on a canvas board, but I used a canvas I had prepped for oils. It is 8 x 10, prepped using Delmus Phelps' process of layering gesso and modeling clay to get the surface ultra smooth.
First thing I discovered - it's not smooth! The canvas was dirty/dusty, but I dragged it out because it was already prepped, and this is nothing but an experiment anyway. If it turns out halfway decent, I'll lay in a dark green background to cover up the smudgyness (is that a word???)
Pencils I'm using right now are Prisma's.
Anyway, I've been bouncing all over the place with this instead of following any kind of step by step process. But it's fun, so I thought I'd share.

Lovely composition Kate, those roses are breathtaking, I love roses. You May want to look at what Golden has to offer, they have so many great materials for doing experimental techniques, I think you may find something there. They give so much information on their mediums and gels. Aleada

Re: Grandma's Rose
I admire your courage Kate, not for doing this on canvas but tackling that ref photo. White, pink and anything of light values are difficult to render with CP on canvas. Keep it up, you might find a solution that has eluded me.

Re: Grandma's Rose
Awh Bleuie, I'm so glad you stopped by! Admittedly I didn't give it a second thought when I chose this photo, I just love the rose. I'm struggling with the whites, but I always do so nothing new for me.
Lynette, Aleada and Angela, thank you for stopping by and commenting. This was an 'outta the blue' thing I decided to try today because I'm at a standstill with my current project. Aleada, thank you for that link, I might just check them out.
So I have to stop for the day, but here's an update. I have some of the lower rose done and have started working in that yellow/orange glow.
C&C welcome!
Kate

Wow! I didn't see you had commented, thank you! This particular rose has that yellow under the petals, which is one of the reasons I chose it. I knew it would be a challenge. Now lets add doing it on canvas and see if we can't make it any more difficult!! I think I'm a little touched in the head!
OK, have to go do home maintenance now!
Have a super evening.

Re: Grandma's Rose
Hi Sheila, thank you! I took that photo a year or so ago from my rose garden. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for stopping by.
Hey Safari Jane, thanks for following along and your positive vibes!
Hi SusieQue. Thanks for stopping by. I have my colors at home, and as I work through this I add more. But I'm keeping track, so when I complete this I'll give you the steps I took and all the colors I used.
