what is the criteria for a Mix Media artwork?

Good Morning everyone

I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting in here.

I have never done a mix media piece before and I have a bit of a dilema....I am a member of a art center in SW Florida....we hold juried show every two to three months our next show is a mix media show and I would like to enter a piece or two but I have never created a piece like this before and not sure if what I would like to do for the show would fall into such a catagory.

I am a pencil artist specializing in color pencil and graphite the piece I would like to do for the show would consist of color pencil and pen and ink on bristol board. I have mentioned this to the gallery chairperson and she gave me a funny look and saying that she may not except that as a mix medium piece but to my way of thinking it is using two different mediums, ink and pencil. here is what I am working on

Any advice and guidence would be helpful with this one as I am a bit confused about this.

Thanks
Sheryl

That's a hard one. As far as we're concerned here on this forum, that would certainly be mixed media, but she may be thinking more along the lines of pieces that are layered, like collages and assemblages. All you can do is ask for clarification, and see if you can get her to understand that not all mixed media is layered work.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out. It's not a bad thing to help people expand their thinking

I agree this is mixed media. I have noticed some judges get picky about it when you have two drawing mediums on one piece especially in regards to graphite, colored pencil, and ink. But yes a clarification of what qualifies as mixed medium is need here by the judge and/or coordinator of this event. Another area they're hesitant about is mixing india ink washes with watercolor or gouache paint.

I'd say that by definition a piece that uses colored pencil and pen an dink would be mixed media, but I think she said she may not accept that as it's two very similar mediums. I'd say if you are wanting to submit to the show, push your limits. Why not take the one medium you are practiced at and merge it with a completely different one. Maybe take a pen and ink drawing and then rip it up and use the pieces to create a final piece with some other medium tossed in.
