Re: Leaving the alley
what an interesting comp, bob!
the bike rider is excess to requirement imho
he kind of spoils the flow for me
why not let the stairs be the coi?

Re: Leaving the alley
I like the rider.. to each his/her own right? The only question I have on this is the shadows. If that is shadow following the rider wouldn't there also be cast shadows from the railing? Like the composition lots!

Re: Leaving the alley
Just take that reverse contrail behind the rider right out and you got a fab image!

Re: Leaving the alley
Great idea making good eye movement. The only thing that jars with me is the shape of the bicycle wheels --- no perspective indicated. I want ellipses!

Re: Leaving the alley
I agree with Crazy and Allanom the shadow from the back wheel to the right detracts
Keep the rider lose the shadow
Don't worry about the perspective it works anyway
Add some definition to whatever it is on the left

Re: Leaving the alley
Challenging view, really good job. If you keep the bicyclist I agree that the wheels need to be more elliptical and I'd lose the long shadow and only have a "grounding" shadow beneath the bicycle.
Regardless, a great job on a challenging perspective.

Re: Leaving the alley
Thanks to the wonderful critiques, I did quite a lot of work on this one:
Allan and Andrew: the "contrail" was in the scene. Some sort of discoloration on the street. But I have a paint brush. Out with it!
Geoff: Good catch on the bicycle wheels. The funny thing is that in earlier layers, I drafted them elliptical but they rounded as I painted more. Dummy! Anyway, fixed now.
Andrew: Added definition to the walls.
La: sorry, cyclist stays
And added some shadowing under said cyclist.

Re: Leaving the alley
That is gorgeous! Well done! I love the way the staircase draws you into the rest of the picture. Removing the big shadow from behind the bike has worked very well.

Re: Leaving the alley
Great composition. The one who looks at your painting is at the same time the one in the painting (though you didn't paint him/her), looking at the biker , if you know what I mean.
