Responding to requests for C and C.

Often an artist will ask for constructive crits on their work. I know there is a forum for Crits on WC but some artists find the feedback a little too overwhelming and prefer something less daunting. I feel that we should all be more aware of the need to help by constructive advice as we see it. We all see things in different ways of course, and that is great. However, if something is glaringly obvious, eg eyes too close together, one a lot lower than the other, a need for some life in the eyes or deeper darks in the fur or hair, we should point these things out (where comments are asked for). This is how we all learn. I for one need things to be pointed out to me. I often don't notice small details. I am too 'close' to the work perhaps. Pointing out the positive aspects of a work is also very important and encouragement in this way is essential to every artist. However, rather than simply praising , let us also help each other to improve.

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

Chammi , I totally agree with the idea your putting forward for constructive crit.
Sometimes it’s hard to be at a detailed level when young or raw talent are just starting off and encouragement has its place. WC A&W seems to give good crit now and again but your right it’s not as constant as one would like.
I think more detailed demos too, will help others develop.

Painting fun

You are right Gary. Detailed demos are a great way to learn especially if the artist gives the colours, brushes etc. he or she has used. Your last one was great.
I am only advocating honest and constructive help where the person posting actually asks for C and C. If not, a simple response to the painting is all that the artist requires.

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

I agree Chammi, I always find critique useful and very helpful often after spending many hours on a piece I find I no longer see it properly and I need someone to point me in the right direction again. This forum is particularly helpful and the advice provided in a friendly non offensive manner. However, I have been on other forums (no names mentioned) where when asking for advise and direction as a very novice artist the critique came in that form of nasty criticism to such a point where I found the comments offensive and completely unhelpful and off-putting, I am no longer a member of that forum. So I think there is a need to carefully consider your response to make sure you get the message across in a helpful and useful manner.

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

That is exactly how I feel Lisa. I spend hours doing a work and then somehow don't see the wood for the trees. I am really not advocating an intensive crit on anyone's work but rather honest and carefully considered helpful advice to improve the painting or drawing etc. and I need to categorically state that only if the artist asks for a C and C.

I definitely agree with what's all been said--thanks for posting this, Chammi! Praise is good, but if the artist really wants some critique, it won't get the artist to where he or she wants to be. A healthy dose of each will both help the artist grow and reward them for their hard work.

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

I totally agree with this! Thank you, Chammi, for stating it here.

I would add to that, if we do ask for C&C, that we're actually prepared to receive it I try to be very sensitive when making suggestions and I know everyone else here does too - but for those of us who want C&C, IMO we owe it to eachother to not take any of the comments personally. I know that receiving a critique can be tough for beginning artists (I've been there, I remember being mortified by my first critiques) but please know that we're trying to help :-)

I agree Chammi I try to help and critic as much as my own limits are but sometimes it is awkward especialy when giving your opinion to someone better than you

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

Thank you all for responding. I believe that we all need to be sensitive to the needs of each person (perhaps newbies asking for crits need to be very carefully considered with positive and then suggestions made). I think, Robbie, that if someone that you consider 'better than you' asks for your honest opinion of his or her work, it is a need to gauge opinions. You need never feel that you are in any way inferior, rather that your opinion as a member of the viewing public is asked for. The reaction of a work of art is nearly always subjective unless you are a totally objective academic. So say how you feel and I am sure the artist will be only too grateful for your input.

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

I'm a beginner with a long way to go but prepared to take risks and make mess...I appreciate crit although Im sorta scared of it and it is very scary to put an effort on wet canvas and maybe people laugh at it but I realise that I need to get feedback in order to grow.

It does feel good when someone who is a fantastic artist says they like your work (hopefully sincerely).

Re: Responding to requests for C and C.

Brenda, sweetie, don't be afraid to ask for a C and C. Nobody would ever laugh at your effort. We all had to start somewhere and folk are very sensitive and aware of the need to give positive feedback and help you wherever they can. I personally think you have great talent and absolutely love your painting of the cow. Keep them coming.
