Crabbing Gear

I am at the beach this week with my artist's group and we are doing a lot of reference photography, sketching, plein air painting, and in-house painting. I took a very vivid photo today of a pile of crabbing gear tossed randomly in a box on the docks of a small crabbing operation. Finally, a chance to dive deep into that Cadmium Red Scarlet Hue that's been looking for a job on my palette! Here's my painting, done this afternoon in a few hours; still needs some details and tweaks.

This was painted with three main colors: Cad. Red Scarlet Hue, Pthalo Green, and Cobalt Blue. There is a very tiny amount of Transparent Yellow Oxide used in a couple of spots. 11 x 14, 140 lb cold press (Pentalic watercolor notebook)

Re: Crabbing Gear

I like it. You couldn't ask for a better opportunity to use that red!

Re: Crabbing Gear

Thanks everyone! And thanks for the crop, Doug. Your color correction is perhaps a bit too bright but is more accurate than my original posted image.

Re: Crabbing Gear

I like how you found an interesting subject and composition in the tools of the industry.

Love the bright red and the darker tones around it.
