Popcorn Tree

Finally finished the background. Tried water color, gouache, and had to rescue it with acrylics. The leaves are pure water color. This was painted from a photo in the RIL by Caryl called Popcorn Tree and was posted in March.

Size 11 x 14, Strathmore paper stretched over canvas. Paints Holbein, Windsor Newton, and Grumbacher.

Thank you Caryl for posting this lovely photo.

Re: Popcorn Tree

Pat, The reference photo was beautiful and inspired me! Can you guess that I like bright colors?

Clay, thanks. I look at all my paintings, and they all seem to end up with a strong background. I guess that is my style!

Thank you Janet and Evartpat. I tend to work a long time building up the colors.

Re: Popcorn Tree

beautiful!
I've never used acrylics- did you thin the paint to get this even, constant colour?

Re: Popcorn Tree

Moria,

In order to use acrylics, I had to seal the painting with an acrylic spray. Otherwise the watercolors and gouache would have lifted. Acrylics are water based. I went straight from the tube. But you can water acrylics down to look like watercolors. The problems is, once the paint is down you cannot lift it. If you squeeze too much out, you cannot go back and reuse it.

Rob,

It is paper stretched over a canvas gallery style. No frame is required. I sealed the watercolor painting with a spray acrylic. Then I redid the background with acrylic paints. The whole painting was then varnished. For prolific painters, it is less expensive. But you can only enter it into a mixed media category at shows.

Very pretty! I've got saplings of this toxic tree coming up in the yard. LOL. Want one?

Re: Popcorn Tree

No thanks! I have cut down all my bushes and have gone to just containers. I only have a crape myrtle. The photo was beautiful, and it called to me.

Re: Popcorn Tree

Just plain cerulean blue acrylic out of the tube of Basics Liquitex paint. It is one of my go to colors for background.

Re: Popcorn Tree

OH, well you can put them in a pot ! LOL! pain in the *&^ tree, I'm glad it made you happy. The glow of the setting fall sun in the leaves called to me too. I missed taking photos of the "popcorn" blossoms this year.
