Early morning

Dear All,
This is on 20x36 masonite, started around 6:30 AM, looking east on Payne's Prarie. It is glorious there early in the morning. In the spring, the redtop weads grow prolifically creating a sea of pink on green.

Linda, Luciuos! Is this the one i commented on when i saw you on Saturday? (i think it is) I get the sense of Paynes Prarie! I think the redish pink weeds are wild celosia. I was noticing just the other day how much more spectacular they seem to be this year compared to others. Great colors!

Yes, you saw this painting in my booth at Spring Arts Festival. I have been painting on this product for a while. I really love it. It is called tile board. I bought a painting from David Johnson, who had used this surface. I get it at Home Depot or Lowes. The advantage is that it has a smooth white surface on the back, attached to the hardboard(masonite). The sheets cut cleaner than plain masonite and they are stronger. No crumbling edges. I also write the location of the painting on the back and sign it on the back, so the white surface is nice for that too.
I really enjoyed doing this painting, I love to work early in the morning or late evening. The contrasts are wonderful and there is something about being out early when the world is just waking up. Animal, thanks for your kind words.

Here is a digital example of some suggestions . The cropping of the composition to pull the eye to the essential parts of the painting. A more dramatic play of lights and darks to accentuate the drama of the light. Adjustment of the shadows and other lines in the pciture to play on the horizontal movement. I hope you find this useful. Nice use of color and light and strong vibrant brush work. Excellent sky

Hi Gene,
Thanks for the suggestions, all good, however, your cropping essentially ruins the scene of the vast prarie where I was working. Payne's Prarie is a well known landmark here, with miles of prarie grasses and swamp. The palms are just a focal point in the vast land there. Local collectors would be dissapointed to lose that long image of the prarie. As a matter of fact, the panel was cut long and narrow with that painting in mind.

Although the darkening of the trees in the left middle ground did bring more drama, and i think i like that very slight adjustment, i have to agree with Linda on the cropping issue. It would work in some situations but she's right, in that, the vastness of the prarie (a huge mass of wetland, that we're oddly, proud of ) would be lost by cropping. I agree with you Gene. This peice has great brush strokes and as i've had the pleasure of seeing it in person i can say that photos just don't really capture that too well!

Sorry I have to agree with linda on this one too. Your crop while it works, takes the picture from the dramatic to a more ordinary picture. Her's lends excitement to the scene, and in reality the composition works beautifully. At first it seems slightly jarring to the eye, but then you realize how harmonious it really is.
