Re: ^%$& Squirrels
Well, so far we've got the monkey trumping the squirrel and the bear trumping both of them! What's next, someone in Africa fighting off lions?
Your story certainly helps me put my problems with squirrels in perspective, Downriver. Glad it had a happy ending though.

Re: ^%$& Squirrels
Nooooooo, they are one of my childhood fears brought through to adulthood. I'm not listening, Brian, I have my fingers in my ears.

Re: ^%$& Squirrels
I don't think this is a competition of scarry creatures, but I cannot resist posting some of my experiences in Africa. No Lions, Sylvia, but snakes! I have already posted about the Black Mamba in my study, but prior to that I had a Mozambiquean Spitting Cobra in our dining room, and a Twig Snake (not an aggressive snake but if bitten, you're in big sh!t, because there's no antivenom) on the handle of our gate, just where I usually put my hand to close it. I had a big fear of snakes since childhood, and can hardly understand how I could handle all the snakes we have had around and in our home! And also knowing tat there is a BIG Rock Python in the Nature Reserve just next to our home!

No thanks, Tommyjav.
I'll keep my bear, at least it knocks before entering.

I would have to move! I don't like the odd garter snake I come across when doing yard work. Cobras, Black Mambas in the house? You're braver than me. How did you remove them?

Re: ^%$& Squirrels
Yes, Moose like apples trees, birch trees, maple trees, they love lilac bushes, all shrubs, hedges, tulips, azaleas, rosehips, tomatoe plants on the porch, garlic bulbs in the gardens, cabbage, cauliflower, broccolli, carrots pawed loose from the ground, sweet peas, cukes in the green house, sourdough pancakes left by the window.
If moose are happy eating, they just look at you and keep browsing. They don't seem to bother the peonies.
There maybe bears and mooose in garden, but there are no snakes where I live!

Re: ^%$& Squirrels
Hi all,
I have another little story to contribute:
In this region here we still have the small red ones but they're not the least more shy
than the others. They use to run around not only in the gardens, but crossing the street
and ducking under the cars is one of their favourites.
My balcony ist one of their favourites, too. They jump from the trees to the railing and start digging
in my flowerpots. Some days I find little heaps of flower soil and the odd walnut shell - empty of course - on the floor.
One of these days I was sitting there and reading, all was very peaceful and quiet. Suddenly from the corner of my
eyes I see a fast movement, a reddish flash, hear a faint noise - tap tap tap - approaching me and the very next momentI
I feel something touching my bare leg under the table, as if it was trying to climb it.
NO MORE PEACE AND QUIET THEN! I guess my neighbours thought I had gone mad because of the scream that burst
out of me. It all happened in the split of a second - another red flash to the opposite direction, a short eye to eye as it stopped
on the balustrade and - off it went, obviously no less shocked thanI had been!!
It never came back, when I was sitting there

ps. has anyone tried making homemade squirrel brushes?

That is why the top of our chimney opening is covered with wire mesh. Do NOT want a squirrel in the house ever — or birds either.
