The Kiss Goodbye, Finished
18"x24" 24kt Gold on prepared paper. Well this is already a serious challenge for me. I hope I can make it through this without scrapping it. It's a drawing of my 14yr old daughter blowing me a kiss. I'm referencing a photo I took of her. It symbolizes her no longer being my "little girl" and moving on to become a woman. So she's blowing a kiss goodbye to her youth. My Gold "lead" and mechanical pencil are in the photo as well. I have about 2.5 hours in it so far.

Good start, Coy. It looks like a pose Marilyn Monroe would do .

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP
Thanks all for the nice replies, I have spent another 6 hours of drawing today to bring the total to 8.5 hours. I think this photo turned out lighter than the drawing, but Gold is not very dark anyway...

Coy, in your bedtime thread you posted wood encased pencils (looked like Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth) and here you are using a clutch pencil. Any preference?

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP
I'm pulling up my chair to watch Coy. Pardon my ignorance, but is this gold ink not graphite? Sorry.
What sort of a frame did you decide on for your step daughter's bedtime work? I had to show it to my family. They, like me, were in awe!!
Thanks Coy, Lyn

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP
It's fun to watch gold or silver drawings develop .. the subject seems to slowly appear from the mists of the background paper - although dark values can be tricky to say the least. Anyway, this is a good start.

I'm using a mechanical pencil, .7 mm. I went to a jeweler and had him pull 24kt gold to .7mm rod to fit in my pencil. I had to prepare my paper to react with the gold so it will leave a mark. I used a paint called ground, I'll post pics of the supplies soon. Hope this answers some question. I like wood pencils with graphite, I like mechanical pencils with Metalpoint...

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP
OK, the penny finally drops. I thought it was graphite and you were going to add a gold leaf - I read lead as leaf, duh!

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP
I started with a piece of Bristol smooth, 4 ply if I remember right, 24"x30". I soaked the paper in the shower until I felt it start to get soft. I then wrapped it around a piece of 3/8"thk Aluminum cut out to 22"x28"(plywood will do here as well) I gently worked the paper to the edges, then used binder clips to fasten the paper to the board. This is a pre-stretch to assure I will have no wrinkles in the paper when painted, I let this dry overnight. I then masked just inside the binder clips, and painted one coat of ground. I lightly sanded that coat, then applied a 2nd coat, and also sanded that coat smooth to knock down the brush marks. Now I'm ready to lay out my sketch.
This is a pic of my supplies, the ground, the piece of 24kt. Gold, the mech. pencil... All laying on the drawing.
The Kiss Goodbye. 18"x24", 24kt. Gold on prepared paper. 10.5 hours of drawing. This is such a challenge for me. I can't get the darks very dark... I'm spoiled to graphite and oil paint, where mistakes are easily corrected. No pressure
