Baby Iverson - WIP

Ok I posted my "playing piece" - Sandra Bullock,
my "practice piece" - Sandals
and now I'm posting my "paying piece" - Baby Iverson.

This was commissioned by Iverson's Daddy just last week. And yes, from everything I've heard his father is a huge basketball fan!

Toned Pastel Paper 18" x 24" - Champaigne
Charcoal and White Chalk

Here is the underpainting for the portrait. It is applied with charcoal dusted Q-tips. The effect doesn't always photograph very well so I grey-scaled the picture making it a little easier to see.

Session 1

Now I've picked up a charcoal pencil and used it for the left eye. Also by "setting" areas of the eye with a tortillon, I now had fresh charcoal on it and was able to use it "draw some detail in the ear and the far left area of the face.

Cute baby... I love the fact that you start around the eyes and work out... the eyes are so important to any piece... and your ability to capture the eyes is staggering...

Do you think you could post the original picture? (if the Mom's thinks it's okay of course)...

Again... I bow to your work,
J

I'm sure it will be ok, I'm just not sure if my scanner will handle it (it's all but completely broken), perhaps if I try to scan it in greyscale it'll have a better shot.

In the mean time here is an update of Baby Iverson:

Ok Jester - I scanned it in Greyscale and it worked ok. When I asked him to see the photo he reached into his wallet and took this picture out...it had obviously been in there for quite a long time and shows the wear and tear of a favorite photo brought out time after time again.

The size of the face (brow to chin) in the reference photo is roughly 3/4" tall...the size of the face in my portrait is a little over 4-3/4" tall.

Ha, ha... damn, you are one brave woman... I've never seen anyone use such difficult photos and get such great results

Looking good... I'm sure you will have two or three additions posts this morning... who needs sleep anyway

Cheers,
J

Sorry J but this will be the last update tonight. I had to lay down some of the midtones in the neck and chest area before I could go back and work on the cheeks and chin - as it overlaps in a sense. At this point it looks really unbalanced, but it's right where it's supposed to be for now.

BTDogMom - Thank you - it's not the best reference photo but I'm really "feeling" this one.

shadowbxre - Yes...I haven't done a "cute" portrait in quite some time (most of my recent commissions are memorial portraits -
I Draw Dead People ) - I like the "mood" though.

Omman542 - Thank you - I hope I don't disappoint anyone.

Here's an update:
