Moon Over Angel Island

Hi all - just wanted your thoughts on this painting I recently completed, 11x14 oil on canvas. One thing I'd correct is to take a few inches off the water and add it to the sky....I'd prefer this to be more about the sky, so I'll remember that for next time....

It definately has a surreal feel to it Steve. The sky is beautifully rendered as is the water. Because of the white highlights on the bluish landmasses, they made me wonder if they were ice bergs or maybe glaciers.

Thanks Ron! Also, thanks for pointing out the highlights on the island hills - they aren't glaciers or ice bergs yet I see how they could be mistaken for that due to my over-zealous moon highlights! Not what I intended! I'll tone that way back.

Steve, you can always use the reflections in the water to heighten the sky's drama, which you have done. The sky's size seems fitting to me. The strength of highlights on the water and the moon itself should be lighter than on the mountains. Sounds like Ron thinks the same about the strength of the highlights

I have to agree with Ron and Brian on the highlights you have on the mountains. I would tone them down just a bit. Overall, very nice painting.

I'm excited about using more grays in my paintings, something I haven't done in the past. That pinkish area in the sky was more cadmium red before, and I just glazed over it with a very very light gray color to get the pink. Same with the upper sky and water, I glazed over it with a grayed down blue to tone it down some....really like how it turned out. Here's to using more grays in my future paintings, lol!
