Irma, if you ever played with CP you would be hooked.

Irma, CP is really painting with pencils. Yes, it is possible to make mud but only the same way you can do so with other painting mediums. When you learn how to mix your color, like S ean has here it can be so addicting!

Thanks Sean and Bren, but man, ladies, I'm not really looking for anything addicting!! I don't get anything done as it is!!
As I type on here, I just remember seeing a YouTube with Lee Hammond showing two pieces done in CP. One looks like a Nectarine and the other like a peach = fuzzy. But she said she used the same colors just different methods. So I guess I will have to have another look at that.
Then what will I do??? I'm so far behind NOW!!
Thanks for sharing. This piece sure is tempting to try CP, though, isn't it?
Blessings to ya IRma

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Thanks so much Katherin, Bren and Irma. One of the things I really like about CP is the ability to add those multiple colors/layers...it gives cp such depth to add those purples and hennas, blues...etc...depending on the colors you are trying to achieve of course. I love pencils of all kinds. I think its because that's all I had growing up. I have tried painting, and might again sometime, but graphite and cp are where my heart it for sure.

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Well, Sean ~
I like what you said, as to where your heart is right now... with pencils either graphite or cp. That is what I primarily thought when I started drawing, almost 8 years ago.
But I would like to try some small water colour with ink outline. I just don't have the desire to do a lot with paint, because I just feel it would be harder to store? I don't know.... just my thought.
I have always liked looking at peoples *penmanship* and found that fascinating. I never realized that that is actually *art*, too. I love calligraphy, too.
But besides *pencils*; I like crocheting and sewing and tatting [more needle work: I do needle tatting rather than with the hand held shuttle.... don't have to wind bobbins, then. ] I like short cuts, to a degree. And I like to know how to fix *mistakes* cuz I make a lot of them, too. I wonder if that is called *art*, too? ha ha ha ha
Bless your heart and thanks for sharing your beautiful work. Irma

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Thanks Irma,
I think most artists will agree that pencils are a tough road sometimes....many art buyers/galleries look at them as somehow less than painting--of any kind....even less than photography, or digital art sometimes. So I strive to keep improving and prove them wrong!
I have been drawing all my life, even though I have had many "life hiatus's" even some very long ones! And have so enjoyed becoming a pro. in 2009. Sometimes it keeps me way too busy with what other people want me to draw (as opposed to what I want to draw), but I appreciate every commission I get... They prove challenging, and push me beyond what I might do on my own.
Anyway, I have previously felt that I was too busy for WC...and I want to finish by saying that I so appreciate (and have missed) all the extra eyes here! Thank you again!
Sean

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Thank you Sean, for sharing.
I started drawing because I got a book that I was able to do the exercises in it where the features looked believable for the first time in my life, in 2004. Then I got a commission that the gal told me after I did 6 members of her family, that she hated my work. But this was after telling me when I was done with only 4, that she *loved* my work.
I thought I wanted to quit for I didn't want another avenue to give people the power to try to destroy me, further in life. I sent a scanned image of the guy that my daughter lives with, to Mike Sibley, via email after just googling Pencil artists and he suggested I try *art forums* for advise and help. That was what I did. I went to another art forum until a number of people I knew, computers crashed just signing in there.... after that site supposedly was updated!! And WC was suggested. So I signed in here/there at the same time, only I forgot about this place as it was all so overwhelming to me at the time.
My intention was to fix those drawings and quit. BUTTTTT I had so much fun learning to draw, since I had not been doing so for a lifetime !~ :-D that I decided I didn't want to give someone that power over me.... be the reason I quit what I was enjoying. So I didn't quit but have learned more and more and know there is so much to learn, I don't think I will ever get it all down pat!! ha ha ha ha
I also learned that some artists will help others and others don't want to help others and will only *degrade* them because of their own insecurities.
So it is all a learning process. Try what people say they do and see if it works.
I initially learned from a book, to make a portrait look recognizable, and I have since learned that I don't want to stick with that procedure and have tried others that I like better. That doesn't say the firs is WRONG or BAD, just a personal preference to change. So that is all part of the *fun*.
Thank you so much for sharing. I like that best in life, in every avenue, sharing!!!
Bless you. Irma

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Oh, and Sean, I learned that people say that pencil work isn't much of art, too. And I also hear that any method of *projection*; *tracing*; and *griding* ~ is all *CHEATING*!!
That used to hurt me. Then I thought, fine, if you feel my work is so full of cheating, then it must be crap to you.... and I'll be *happy* to just keep it, then!! NO PROBLEM-O!!! ha ha ha A real simple fix!!!
That was after I learned to get past *hurt feelings*.... so yeah.
I guess it does come down to what the individual wants in art, right?
I mean, isn't is said, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? So yeah.
YOU ~ have beautiful work!!! I appreciate your sharing here because I could not afford to pay for it. That doesn't say it isn't worth a lot, it says I'm *BROKE!* ha ha ha
Bless you, dear friend [and those dear to you. ] Irma

Wow. This is looking so nice. I have to say I was not sure where you were going with the strong shadows but it all seems to be working out well. Bravo.

Thanks Carol! It has been a huge challenge...I think I should have steered them to graphite, but i am happy right now!

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Your work is very good.
One place I would double check is the dark plane on the front of the nose and muzzle. If you darken it a bit, it will help flatten the front of the nose and make it look a bit less um..swollen. It will help make the likeness better. As it is now, you have a Y shaped bubble form in the side of the muzzle that disturbs the likeness you are trying for.
Also the color of the collar could be less intense. That would make it float above the dog less, and sink into the image more.

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
A small update on the pointer after not working on him for almost a week. (Was at the art show). Anyway, started burnishing his head, added some BG --not really happy with it, but this is what the client wanted), also in the process of darkening up some shadows.
BTW...thought I would share that there were several categories for BIS, voted on by the other artists at the show...none for pencils or any dry media. So here we go...the hard road of the pencil artist! I know that I received votes, as a few of the people asked me, "what category does your work belong in, we want to vote for you,"
Needless to say, I didn't win anything, but I did speak with management and asked them to include a dry media (pencil/pastel/charcoal category next year.)

Re: German Shorthaired Pointer XP in CP - WIP
Excellent work on this, Sean.
As for the art show. Well, I do believe that is a larger spectrum as this old lady that I drew for her 80th b'day. I asked her daughters what they thought of the idea and the LOVED it, because they each wanted the drawing when she passes on. The lady herself thought a drawing would have no value... UNTIL her RICH brother-in-law spoke up and said out WEST, I could make money in it. Well, it is not feasible for me to move there.... but it is CRAZY how one determines *value*. Actually, it is the same thing in looking at *a life*. So yeah....
All the best to you in your art sales/shows. YOU do fantastic work. But then, I can't afford to pay what it's worth... not that I am talking and not wanting to pay!!
Bless you and those dear to you. Irma
