Charlie Russell my hero!(x-Posted in animals)

Charlie Russell my hero!
I got a book of Russell paintings and sculpture. I decided to do some sketches to brush up my horse drawing.

I started from the back end and got lost making the front larger, so I started from the head and it worked out better.

These are all from one painting and there were more I didn't get to.

Sketched from sculpture he did.

Unbearable started at wrong end again. Oh well. From sculpture

Big Horn Sheep sculpture.

This one I made up. Graphite.

I added some background to this one.

I also got a book 'Horses of Camargue' very nice to work studies from.

This weekend I found out I was born in the year of the dragon(Chinese dinning) so I drew this up. Must be a Southwestern dragon

Charlie Russell and Playing with ball point pen. X-post pen-ink and Animals

Ballpoint pen for these.

'Bless you!'

Foals

This was done, birds in black ink, horse in blue ink. It looks better in all black.

Love the interaction with the birds.

Frisky!

Oh that itch!

So strong.

Prancing

Portrait in blue.

A day at the spa!

These horses share their living space with these black bulls.

I got a little tired of horses and switched to dinosaurs. Studies to get ready for a mural. This is Struthiomimus.

A Sauropod (Brachiosaurus I wondered why they don't have articulated ears) and a Ceratopsian (Triceratops). What the Sw had dinos!

I'm not drawing much these days, but have enjoyed sketching animals. Here are some after some photos by my old friend Janice.

Thanks for taking a look.
Mike

Hi Mike, and welcome to SW/W Art!

It doesn't get much better than Charlie Russell, does it? You did a great job with these studies. Good sense of proportion in them and you got the feel of the horses' movements really well. I especially love that last horse drawing. Very poetic and poignant.

Wonderful ink sketches, as well! I like them very much. Well done! Hope to see more of your work.

I've probably doodled thousands of horses in ballpoint pen, it's how I learned to draw. Yours are what I always dreamed mine would look like [bows low].

Love the Pileated Woodpecker too

This is really a good slap in the head for me.
I have been so aimed at finished stuff for a long time that I am almost nervous sketching. I have a lot of really amazing opportunities and TIME coming up. I doubt my pieces will come near this, but I think you have pushed me into forcing myself to haul along a small sketchbook on my future travels. It is good for the muscles.
GREAT WORK!

Nice!! You must have stacks of sketchbooks full of these. . . . Thanks for sharing! I like the one with the horse and egret on its back the best. I have that beautiful Camargue book also!
