Coyote Lunchtime
I was out shooting a couple of days ago and was taking pics of this Black-billed Magpie when something startled it ...
A coyote popped up from behind that mound and made a grab for the magpie!
The bird was too quick for him, so he turned his attention elsewhere, did a little jump-pounce thing ...
And made a quick duck'n'grab ...
And came back up with a wee mousie for lunch!
See? Look closely because that mouse was chewed up and swallowed right before my eyes! Chomp! Chomp!
With a lick of his chops, he was off and hunting for more.
Kinda cool to see Ma Nature's critters doing their natural thing in the wild. This is the kind of shooting I like best - taking pics as life happens around me.
Thanks for looking! C&C always appreciated.
Cheers,
Sue

Re: Coyote Lunchtime
Thanks, Deb. I was sitting in my van shooting and was about 30 feet away. I had the 28-300mm lens on the D70 and this isn't full zoom.
One thing I have learned over my years is that the van (or any vehicle) makes a great "blind" to shoot from. My van has no seats in the back - but it has a small table and a chair and room to set up my tripod so I can sit and shoot out of the open sliding side door. Because I am inside where it is darker, I am not considered a threat - if they even realize I am in there at all. It works well. I take a picnic

Re: Coyote Lunchtime
Nice series of shots Sue. I agree that it can be fascinating to see wildlife doing what they are born to do and do naturally. To see it on a wildlife documentary on TV is one thing. To see it first hand, up close and personal is a very different experience.

That's a very cool sequence of images. I bet you were surprised when you zoomed in and found he had something in his mouth - I know I was.

Those are so wonderful. I miss seeing magpies, we don't have them here. I like that third one, he's so focused. And the second one with the magpie escaped is perfect.

Re: Coyote Lunchtime
I remember old old collie-shepherd doing the vertical jump and pounce dance in tall grass. Animals are so much fun to watch.
Thanx for sharing these with us.

Re: Coyote Lunchtime
When I see these photos, I see what my zoo pictures are missing...the exciting, thrilling feeling of catching animals in their natural habitat. This has to be so much more satisfying than taking photos of animals confined in a zoo.
Did you feel like a photographer from National Geographic?

Re: Coyote Lunchtime
What a neat series of photos. I like the second one best with the magpie looking at the coyote to see if it will make a stupid second attempt (kind of like Tweety and Sylvester)
