First CP painting

Here is my first CP painting. I have finally used my last year christmas gift - a set of Derwent watercolor pencil.

I really enjoyed working with CP, and I'm thinking of buying the Derwent artist or studio pencils. I have a feeling that they are more colorful than my watercolor pencils, or am I wrong?
The size is 20 x 30 cm and on ordinary drawing paper.

o.O My god! The girl is just sooo cute! I love her! And the toy is also cool, but I donīt like how you use padded black around its mouth, if you do it, you can also pass black aroung everything else or kept it withouth the black in any part
Thatīs only a suggestion, but itīs still really cool

Welcome!

This really is adorable! I can almost hear her laughter while she plays.

To me it seems like you could take this a bit further for a more "finished" piece, and it would be just awsome. As it is right now the black outline on the gators mouth draws to much attention away from the little girl. You did an awsome job on the toy, and i love the highlight on the "teeth" LOL.

I can't seem to get into wc pencils, find them frustrating. You did terrific with them though.

Welcome to WC and colored pencil. I think you did a wonderful job on this, especially for a first CP work.

I agree with pencils for me...I also think because she's sitting in air, it feels unfinished. Plan your drawing out before you start. I'd also like to see more contrast on her...bring out the darks and lights more.

Thank you for your comments!

Wow, thank's alot for taking time and answering.
Well... I agree about the black - I have tried to soften it down.

But I don't know how to take it further and how to make it more "finished". I have tried to darken the shadows, but I'm afraid that I will ruin everything if i continue.

And how to fix the problem that she is sitting in the air?? Should I try to make some water around her? I'm terrible at backgrounds. *trembeling*

Welcome sweFanta!

You have done a terrific job... Hard to believe it's your first!!!

Derwent pencils are on the hard side. There are softer ones, but learning about colour would help you use a wider range (even within the hard leaded) and shade better. It comes with practice based on knowledge.

Jeffrey (a.k.a. Gorilla) wrote something once, very wise. I am paraphrasing, because I don't remember her exact words, and it made an impact on me: attack it! it's only paper...

WOW!! This is fabulous!! I love the shine u got on the float VERY GOOD - and as far as a background - don't let Arlene here u say that! LMAO LOL - she'll tell u 2 ALWAYS plan your background 1st (even if u don't create it 1st, plant it 1st) - it's 2 hard 2 "make-up" a background around a subject. But I do think u have done a wonderful job on this

This is a wonderful drawing, but to properly use the Derwent Water color Pencils, you may want to add some water. Just take a brush with some water, not really dripping wet, just more on the damp side and that will turn your drawings into watercolor paintings. After you "paint" over the drawing with a little water, you can let it dry and add more color and rewet it to get even more depth. These are tricky pencils to use at first, but once you get the feel for them, they are wonderful and give fantastic results.

Try this method on some scrap paper to get the feel before you actually work on a drawing.
