Day 1 Walking in the Lakes

I recently spent a week hiking in the Lake District with a group of men from our church, in what is becoming an annual event for me. This year the weather/light was amazing and, unlike previous years, I’ve come back with loads of material for paintings. So I’m planning on doing at least one painting for each day away.

On Sunday afternoon (Day 1) we walked out of Keswick up Skiddaw and back (about 4 hours). On top we walked thru a blizzard with drifting snow, but the rest was glorious.

This painting is on the way up, looking away from Skiddaw. Fells in distance are a bit too big – snow on them upset my photo so will be reworked accordingly. Probably not going to put any people in this one.

18x14 Oil on canvas all C&C welcome. Thanks Arnie

What a beautiful area to hike! Love the feel of the landscape ... the atmosphere of the distance. A daunting path to hike; up and down those mountains.
I love the spring greens you have caught so well!

When I look into the distance in spring I am in awe of the possible 70 plus shades of green I see in the woodlands. What a palette!

Re: Day 1 Walking in the Lakes

Wonderful again.. I like your style of painting, starting with a value matching the background through out and later making the foreground darker..Painting made easy in your format I think..I will give this tech a try...

Saravanan.

Re: Day 1 Walking in the Lakes

Thanks Saravanan. Interesting observation on style. I like to cover the canvas with paint quickly, getting the sky essentially done 1st sitting, and then repeat progressively adding more detail with each sitting or refining if it isnt working (like the sky in this one). I try not to worry about getting things exactly right as they can be corrected if necessay later.
Also trying not to end up with dark foreground - but doing so makes it easier to get a ful contrast. Arnie
