The Walking Dead/Daryl Dixon

Hi all! This is my first post and I wanna say I'm so happy to see all your amazing works here. I'm very new to scratchboard and I'm quite intimidated to post one of first works, but who better to comment right?

So I'm a huge fan of the show The Walking Dead. I knew I was going to be meeting Norman Reedus and I wanted to get him to autograph something special. That equaled a scratchboard. Like I said, new to scratchboard but I really love it and can't wait to work on more. This was also the first I used any colored ink and I think that's one of my favorite things about it. It is a 5x7, Ampersand and I used black transfer paper for the image.

I don't think I would have left the background bare if I wasn't getting him to sign it, but it makes the open space under his arm look odd.

And one of the several reference photos I used.

As an artist himself(as well as an actor) he loved it, and I appreciated that more than anything. But I would love comments, tips, thoughts what-have-you from this group as well.

Sherry

Sherry this is a wonderfully well done board regardless of whether it is your first or 100th. You have a bright future as a scratchboard artist.

Well done, most certainly for a first board. Welcome to the dark side.

Re: The Walking Dead/Daryl Dixon

You shouldn't be intimidated to post this...you tackled, what other's refer to as a, SMALL board, added color, did skin, did a great job on the fabric.
I'd say you should be quite proud. Not only is it a good job but you jumped in full speed ahead
Keep that kind of drive and desire and I have a feeling you'll be crankin' them out with the best of em!
Intimidated....pashaw! Keep scratchin' and showin'
(that is a cool show too, too bad I don't get to watch it much)

This is niiice, Sherry! So glad you shared it with us. It has a wonderful feel and it looks like you already have developed a style. I like the minimalist, etched look

If that area under his arm bothers you, what about inking over it and just outlining the edges as you did around the rest of him? That's a very striking effect!

I agree with Ann. Ink that spot in and highlight the jacket around it. Right now it just does not fit the rest of the composition. You did an excellent job, first board or not.

I always welcome C & C. Even if I have finished it and applied fixative, I can always apply your thoughts to the next one.

Re: The Walking Dead/Daryl Dixon

Thank you all so much for the comment and suggestions. I think I really needed to hear the encouragement and stop second guessing myself. LOL

I'm already working on the next board and can't wait to share.

Sherry
