Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

Thank you, Chammi, for the lovely ref photo's. The boabab is indeed a very unique tree, it is also refered to as the Upside-Down tree and the legend is that after the Lord made the palm tree and others, the boabab complained a lot, and the Lord got so angry about its moaning that He pulled it out and planted it upside down!
They reach heights of up to 30m/98ft and trunk diameters of up to 11m/36ft. A boabab in the Limpopo Province in South Africa until recently had a circumference of 47m/154ft! Boababs store water inside their swollen trunks, up to 120 000 litres! They don't have year rings for dating, but one tree has been carbon dated at over 6000yrs old!
Happy painting everyone,
Charri

Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

Thanks for sharing such interesting information Charri. I do hope you will be joining in. I had a friend in SA who only painted Baobabs. She was an absolute expert on everything to do with them. They simply fascinated her.

That's interesting - if I get thirsty painting, I can tap the tree
Thanks for the story/facts Charri

Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

Hi,

I haven't been around on WC for a long time, but lately I have taken up painting in acrylic, and I would like to join this challenge.

Yes but unfortunately, my eyesight is so good any more, so I have decided to try to paint in acrylic on canvas.

Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

I decided to just have fun and fool around with the reference pic of the acacia tree.

I´m almost done so I guess it is safe to say I´d like to participate if it is still possible. My "painting" looks more like a sketchy drawing done with a brush and has strayed quite far from the original reference, though .

Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

Ferlian, I am so pleased you are participating. Straying from the original reference is absolutely fine. These refs are just a guide and there will be all sorts of interpretations which makes the challenge so interesting. Looking forward to seeing your work on the 20th.

Re: Different Strokes May 2012 Challenge

Welcome allanraj and Ferlian - and as long as the work is in acrylics, how far you stray doesn't matter

Better get myself in gear - .... ratcheting up the old cogs!

You should have told me you were doing trees. I love doing trees. Nobody tells me anything anymore anyways. Ahhh well.
