Nora, I think it's lovely work!! Amazing what you can do in that time frame..

Nora, it looks like pink, red, orange, yellow and green flesh tones. Hmm, maybe more flesh umber for the shadows? Might help the values a bit. Nice looking youngster and great job!

Re: What's On Your Easel?....May 2012
Thanks Nancy, Becca and Catherine. I don,t really have a standardalette I use for skin tones. It is mostly dictated but the color of the light in the room. We have some greenish overhead fluorescents and a warm orangish spotlight, plus cool north light from a row of windows in the old cafeteria where we meet. So it is always a challenge when it comes to color and an opportunity to experiment!
I had cas red light, cad yellow light, yellow ocher, raw umber, ivory black, Alex crimson and a light green and ultramarine blue on my palette

Nora, thanks for bringing up the aspect of light and the color we choose to use, you have a great eye for it.. and forgot to say earlier, I don't think your eyes are getting old yet, but if you are having issues...see the doc.

Rodeo Queen, 40 x 30, oil on linen
Who doesn't love a cowgirl decked out in a big hat, scarf, Fancy gauntlets (I want a pair!) and boots? This painting is based on a Rodeo performer from the 1920's.

Re: What's On Your Easel?....May 2012
This is my dad when he was in the service @ 1943. Been working on this one a long time. I had some commission work that I had to get to, so this has been sitting many months. I re-worked the face, now it finally looks like my dad...I still have to put his earphones on and finish the hat and coat. Happy Memorial Day to all our men/women who have served.

Judy, he's a beautiful avatar for the Greatest Generation, and I can see the love you've put into it so far - what a fantastic painting you're doing here; his eyes look so alive! The original pic was black and white, wasn't it? The flesh tones are inspired! I so look forward to your finish!

Thanks, Nancy, it was one of those black and whites that had a bit of color added after the fact. Pretty bad reference, but it is coming along.

Re: What's On Your Easel?....May 2012
The product of this afternoon’s work. Long way to go yet, but a reasonable start. A bit of a change in direction from what I’ve been doing recently.
Painted from a photo rather than life unfortunately, but the sea really is that colour down in Cornwall!

Should have mentioned that it's oils, 12 x 16. The dark patch of sky at top left is shadow form the easel...

started this pale beauty yesterday..still have a fair bit to do on it.
Judy Manuche..a truly lovely portrait...the love you have really comes through in the sensitive handling of the paint.
K>Henderson...love the 1940's or 30's look of this
Dollardays..your work is so distinctive...the vigour of the ypoung man is apparent in this!

Re: What's On Your Easel?....May 2012
Kay, I just love the nostalgic feel of your Rodeo Queen painting. It takes me back to my childhood, watching the b&w action shows on Sat. morning tv.
Judy, what a lovely tribute to your dad for Memorial Day!
Larubia, there is really something intense going on in this portrait. Great job!
Graham, wonderful start with this one. I see HUGE potential here, & can hardly wait to see how it develops.
