Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Nancy, how old is the structure that you're living in? I think you can do better then the $2700 quoted. Did he say it was a 100 amp or 200 amp service panel?

Make him do it for 6 months, Nancy, tell him it is training in case he ever needs it.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Marcia, I had a father and a son who could repair or build anything, but I never managed to marry a man who had those skills. I even got how-to books on plumbing and learned to install stuff, but I shied away from the electric stuff.
Thanks for the advice; I will check into it! Retirement with its fixed income isn't always gravy, even when you love the work you do in retirement...

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Paul, it's 100 amp and the electrician recommended that I boost that to 125. The house was built in the sixties, and several major improvements have been made since then.
Becca, I'm still trying to stay awake. He's out with his telescope, since the rains finally cleared out and gave him a dark-of-the-moon sky. I like your idea - if we could just make it on a temporary basis, he might be able to see what I go through to make ends meet, and if I die first, he won't be stranded in a financial area that has all the "arrangements" I've made with creditors.
It's more his style to pay everything the minute it comes due, and let the devil take the hindmost...

I asked a friend of mine who is an electrical contractor about the quote you got, and he said your quoted price was between $1000 to $1500 too high. I suggest you call around for some quotes. I would think that prices would be higher on the east coast, not the other way around.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
7 years ago I had installed a new 400 amp service which also included 3 phase power. They had to take it from the pole and install a electric meter on the outside of the building along with the 400 amp panel. The cost was $1800.

Good morning Sid....and everyone else ....I seem to have overslept.
Paul that power grid of yours is unusual...we had 3 phase power on the farm, but even for a farm that was unusual...

Good Morning Becca....
I had that power because I use to own a fairly large winery. I expanded and put up another building.

I was already guessing it was for your winery.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Speaking of electricity...wind farms are becoming and enormous thing here now...and they are enormous...i kind of like looking at them, though there are some environmentalists that have issues with them..
The ones in place should be doing very well lately..the wind won't stop!!! And, I had planned on walking errands again...guess I will scrap those plans..

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Good Morning Everyone!!!
Excellent article Sid.
Most of it I suspected, knowing what to look for if you suspect your breakers are faulty, is very valuable information. Also, with so many electrical devices, most of which never quite power off completely, overloading the circuits on an older home is easy to do.
Funny thing about some environmentalists; they get their shorts in a twist over coal generated electricity, then solar plants (esp nimbys), and wind farms, but I have yet to see any of them give up their electrical gadgets, in fact many drive hybrid cars! A bit of a disconnect, eh? heh, so to speak.
Edison is putting up solar mirrors here which some people have a problem with, another company wanted to put up a windfarm, which would have upset the nimbys anyway, but pretty much upset everyone because they proposed to put it in a particularly scenic area along the top of some buttes, not too soon after a plan to run enormous power lines from the Colorado river to LA in the same area was defeated.

Marcia, these windmills I have gazed at are in a scenic area too..and I really still like looking at them...seems someone will have a gripe no matter what. I hope today is good to you.
