Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012

Becc, it is essentially the same palette.
serrano's plein air palette and sid's cheaper, no cad substitutes:
yellow ochre- yellow ochre
cad yell lt- winsor yellow
cad orange- remb vermilion
aliz crim- aliz crim
ultra blue- ultra blue
pthalo green- phthalo blue
burnt sienna- burnt sienna
I don't like phthalo green as much as I do blue, like I said earlier, I can mix any freakin color I ever want except a bright phthalo green which I would never want anyway.
If you like cads and have no issues with using it then I would just use them, no problem at all. But when someone asks if it is absolutely essential and required to use them I answer no, it is not essential.

Thanks, Sid, will see how it goes... now I only need time to paint....and to buy a few new tubes too.

phthalo green just ain't natch'rel to me, it is so off the hook. Better when toned down like in permanent greens. If I use a green I guess viridian is my first choice.

I never liked tube green til I tried viridian...Schmid recommended it. He pointed out it could be easily warmed or cooled..
And, now you are endorsing it too..couldn't be better.

the way I see it, for myself at least, there is so much pollution going into our local environment from ag and other industries, my cads are truly a drop in the bucket..or any of my other chems as well...I am still responsible in my handling of them...just see a much bigger picture.

M. Harding Permanent Sap Green is great. I don't use it as much as I'd like though. I might find a way to shoehorn it in to the painting I'm working on at the moment, maybe as the background.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012

I shouldn't say i never want it, there is a very light tint of phthalo green that is fresh, clean, bright, and very minty looking that no other color can get, I have a lifetime supply if I ever need it. Sap green seems to come in real handy for landscapes but I know some even use it for portraits. I have them all except cadmium and cobalt green but I will get them too sometime.

OK, i am a big fat liar because i just remembered using phthalo green and white to get exactly that fresh minty green color in this painting, it is mainly in the light greens in the background and i really did love the color I got with it, so forget everything i ever said about colors
