I love those metal lawn chairs! ( Almost makes me wish I had a lawn)
I was going to take some shots last night, but my subjects weren't cooperative. I may take a couple tonight, 'just because'. Mainly I want to figure out what the correct settings are in the camera.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Alright, a few weeks ago, I made the mistake of A) Telling my bf that scorpions glow under a black light, and B) I showed him a black light I bought for such a purpose (it also shows where pets have peed, even after it's cleaned up, but I digress...). So now we now have a tank with 7 arachnids of varying sizes residing there-in. The good news is that they can be released back outside, and I don't really mind them. Much. The upside was experimenting with taking pictures under a black light. The problem I had the other day was a slight bit of movement blur, which I mainly attribute to the camera moving a bit when I hit the shutter release button. I set it to release 2 seconds after I hit the button and that helped a lot. The scorps however, have become shy and I can't get shots as good as the ones from last week. So I hope you are all prepared at this point to see the results of tonight's photo shoot:
About the only thing that would make this shot better is a better lens. I was using Canon's plastic fantastic wonder, the $99 50mm portrait lens. What I have been jonesing for is this:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx
or something similar, for shooting musicians up close in low light conditions.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
Good Morning Everyone.....
Marcia because of something you said about a Calif. law which I posted some info about a couple of weeks back. It protects artist royalties and I saw this in this mornings art news....
Los Angeles, CA - Famed artist New York Chuck Close, the estate of sculptor Robert Graham and other artists have launched legal action against several top auction houses, alleging they violated a California law requiring royalty payments for the sale of their artwork. Federal lawsuits filed against Sotheby's, Christie's and eBay on Tuesday are seeking class-action status, in an effort to open up the action to other artists as well, .which could total hundreds of thousands of dollars given current art prices. The lawsuits allege that the auctioneers have violated the California Resale Royalty Act, a 1977 law enacted to give visual artists a financial cut from the sale of artworks they had created but no longer own. They are seeking unspecified damages.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
I'm about to shell out some more money on paints because the company I buy from sent me a free delivery code and I'm very easily suckered in to spending money that I do and don't have. Also I have a devil of a throat infection and it'll stop me feeling sorry for myself.
I have a question though. Do cadmiums really make much of a difference when painting? I have a scarlet lake that's about as powerful as I've ever seen paints come before. One wrong move and putting it on my palette ends up the painting equivalent of putting a red sock in the washing machine with white clothes. I was wondering if I'm on the right track if I use that to replace my cad red.
I haven't exactly had a huge need for a bright red and a bright yellow before in my images but I'm still settling in with my painting and I feel like there's something missing that should be there, and cadmiums are always at the forefront of oil paint discussion. I can get them in W&N for £12 GBP, Harding for £17 and Old Holland for £22. If not, I'll stick with the ones I have and pick up a burnt sienna, a new black and a huge pot of gesso since I go through the stuff like crazy.
You'd think that with the things they can do with chemistry these days, someone somewhere would be able to develop a safe, opaque synthetic pigment. Maybe someone is doing it somewhere.
Also, on another note, does anyone ever find themselves looking at scenes in every day life/on TV and thinking about what colours would mix to make certain objects? I was watching TV earlier and found myself mentally mixing the characters' skin tones from the colours I own.

Re: The Oily Rag....................Come and Chat, May 2012
You might like Rembrandt Permanent Red in place of the cads, it is a beautiful and powerful red...I use it but do love the cads and don't think I ever use them straight from the tube, but always mixed.
Seems that art supply bug is catchy...have an email from Jerrys and decided to give it a look.

absolutely not, there are plenty of pigments that work fine, just as many worked fine before cads were ever invented, now there are a bunch more options. I like napthols, pyroles like remb perm red, winsor red, bright red, and you can make screamin bright reds by mixing perm aliz crimson or quin red with winsor orange or rembrandt vermilion. Some just have preferences and use what they like and are used to, they say "but cadmiums are opaque" but the thing is, they are so strong and you use them so sparingly that the opacity isn't really an issue. Ultramarine blue is not opaque at all yet it is probably the most used blue of all time.

Sounds amazing...now you have given me something to try.
Funny thing is I almost always mix a little aliz crimson or quin red with my cads too..to cool them..then cool them more with a mix of blue or purple...

Good Morning!!!
Paul, that is interesting about the artists going after royalties. I had no idea that that law had been in effect until you mentioned it before, nor for that long.
