The Plant Parade, a forum Project: May 2012
May Plant Parade
Art Nouveau - French for "The New Art." An international art movement and style of decoration and architecture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, characterized particularly by the curvilinear depiction of leaves and flowers, often in the form of vines. These might also be described as foliate forms, with sinuous lines, and non-geometric, "whiplash" curves.
Welcome to the world of the Art Nouveau period with a splash of the rain forest. . .
The art of the Art Nouveau period was full of curves and vine-like lines to give it such a decorative style, so we are going to add those elements into our paintings.
We are going to concentrate on one artist that gave us many posters in this style: Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939). He was one of the most important decorative artists working in Paris at the turn of the century. His distinctive and original posters and his decorative panels in le style Mucha became almost synonymous with French Art Nouveau. Here
You will find some of his work here.
Now, let’s see where the Rain Forest Splash comes in. . .oh, yes, the flower:
Bird of Paradise!!
We are going to marry one time period with a classical Rain Forest beauty! Mucha never considered this, but we are creative artists and may start our own movement!!
Any medium, naturally and any size!
Reveal date is May 25th. . .no sooner!
The object is to have fun!! Now, create a piece of art you may not have thought of doing before!
Think 'lyrical, decorative, line' and see where it takes you!
Glad you are going on this adventure with me. . .have a ball!!
Katherine

This is just an example of the Art Nouveau style that Marianne Mathlasen painted in 2007. . .thanks for sharing Marianne!!
Note: your BOP can face either way. . .blush!!

Re: May Plant Parade. . .
What an interesting challenge this is going to be.
I'm not really a fan of art nouveau, but I am going to try to join in this month, it should at least get my brain cells working.
I love bird of Paradise flowers, now how to incorporate them into the theme...... I feel the ink and watercolours are going to be getting an airing.

Re: May Plant Parade. . .
Oh crikey!!
This is a fabulous, really clever challenge but Katherine, your immortal words are a real worry: 'lyrical, decorative, line'
Can it not be 'splodge, splodge and splodge???'
Delicacy not being in my brush maybe the inks will have to be shaken up!
At least I know the Bird of Paradise or Strelitzia flower very well so that's a comfort....or is it??
Well, from the rest at least I think there will be some stunning and exotic results. I'll love to have a go but... well.....what an amazing challenge and a chance to get to know Alphonse. Thank you and ......brilliant!

Re: May Plant Parade. . .
OMG what are you doing to us??? My poor, pathetic, timid brain is spinning and spinning (I should say it is lurching and lurching, because it is not especially lyrical in its movement). Not certain that this is anywhere near my capability or limited imagination, but...... gonna have to get out the kids' book and try chugging along with "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! I expect magnificence out of all the rest of you though!
