Op Challenge May 2012
 Hi all
Welcome to the Oil Pastel Challenge for May
The 'challenge' is for ALL abilities and you can experiment or sketch or leap out of your comfort zone. It's up to you.
These are ALL my own photos so no copyright issues.
Please feel free to post as you go.... 'WIP', either if you'd like to show us your process, which we love to see, or if you get stuck and need help and advice. We are all friendly and happy to help. We don't bite!
When you post your finished piece please state:
Support including any prep
size
OilPastels used
if you have used any thing with the OP for undercoat
Other mediums may be used to complement, but the work must be primarily Oil Pastels.
OIL BARS may also be used
You have the whole month, but if you are unable to post by 31 May the threads do remain open..
I am currently uploading larger refs to the RIL,
First as it is spring let us start with this newborn baby lamb that I photographed just a couple of weeks ago in a farm high up in the Yorkshire Dales
http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...&ppuser=179312
Some landscapes....
this one is a mountain overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake in the English Lake District in Cumbria. I took it on a rainy day in the autumn.
no idea why but it is a peak called 'Barf' officially on the OS map .
http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...&ppuser=179312
I've posted this place before but not the same photo. I'm hoping this will be quite an easy one to do...
Beach at Freshwater West
http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...&ppuser=179312
The obligatory Flower - A clematis bloom
http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...&ppuser=179312
A still life you can play around with..some rather manky (past their best) cherries
http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...&ppuser=179312
And finally, a touch of nostalgia....
A teenage girl's bedroom, and a 70s guitar.... sorry this photo is too old to have a higher res image.
I can't wait to see what you do with these and I've tried to choose a selection with varied interests and hopefully not too difficult as we have some new to the medium.
ENJOY!!!!!

Re: Op Challenge May 2012
Ok I'll start off the month with my rather unsatisfying effort .....Neos on A4 bright pink canford card.....it's nowhere near the mental image i had in my head but as a sketch it served as a useful exercise for playing with the oilies on a smooth unprimed surface, only a thin layer of colour goes on but scraping off unwanted areas is easy. As you can see I removed one of the cherries and went to town scribbling all over the background, shame it didn't work as planned.
Sorry about the pic quality I'm working away so only have my phone camera on hand

Steve the cherries are wonderful. Their texture and highlights are right on.

Well, I think those are awesome cherries, Steve and interesting effects with the smooth paper.

Wow, the cherries are great. I love the contrast with the background and the 'scribbly' textures of the cloth. I would be very happy to have produced this!.

Re: Op Challenge May 2012
Steve - grats on being first.
Sorry it has taken me a while to check in. Wasn't onm line all day yesterday and for some reason some of my subscribed threads don't highlight new posts.
i love this... I love th4e composition and the squiggly background,. Excellent likeness on the scarf and those cherries look real enough to eat.
I've used DR Canford for Cp but never considered it for OPs as it is totally toothless.
Well Done.

Re: Op Challenge May 2012
Totally toothless, that sounds like retirement!
Unbelievable job on the cherries. I bet if you put this aside and look at it in a month you'll be impressed (but maybe that only works with me).
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Op Challenge May 2012
Steve- I like your drawing of the cherries. In my opinion, the contrast between the smoothness of the cherries and the texture of the BG is really cool.

Re: Op Challenge May 2012
Hi,
Steves cherries are wonderful, nevertheless, I also gave them a try.
Thanks, Lin, for the interesting photos. I also like the newborn lamb very much.
Best,
Evalisa
