WIP-help appreciated

Hi Folks, I'm not too keen on this..may end up painting over it..but I can see some good things in there...maybe I have just looked at it too long...looks too messy..any ideas for pulling this together would be appreciated. I've got someone coming to my studio on Friday so I am hoping to sort this out tommorow!

Re: WIP-help appreciated

How about some input from a newbie?

I think the lower left is really cool, there the dark and light blue fighting with each other. Just to the upper right of that are some circle objects, and those tended to draw my eye first, maybe you don't want that? There seems to be a mix of soft edge to the color plane changes in some areas, and hard edge changes in others. Maybe to go one way or the other? Theres always gesso and then this is texture below the next painting.

Hi Chuck, Yes I also like the bottom left corner too..those two blues are nice together and I'm actually thinking of taking out the peachy orange which is immediately next to that and coming up to cover those double interlinked dark blue circles you mentioned, and above that I think the cream circle just needs to be orange..Mmm not sure yet. I usually paint on stucco, and I didnt with this one...so if I have to I can always put some stucco on top...for added texture, I dont think I will have this finished for Friday!

I like what is going on with this piece. But the bottom left is getting all the attention right now. You need something to pull the eye around.

I think reducing the palette to a few colors would help, some of your more successful pieces in the past have utilized this key move. It also looks a little soft to me, some harder edges might help strengthen it's impact.

Have to agree with its Allart I think that it looks a little soft and would benefit from some defining edges, especially the top right hand side

Re: WIP-help appreciated

I think if you asked 10 different artists to finish this work they would probably all come up with different solutions.
It already contains many beautiful areas almost too many for the eye to take in. If it were mine I would be tempted to remove i.e. wash or glaze over some areas to give a little rest bite for the eye. The hard part would be deciding what to take out!

Re: WIP-help appreciated

You know Katie, when I look at this the shiny golden object in the center, it looks like a figure wearing a turquoise and pink outfit with a gold mask where the pink circle is for one eye with the other eye just around the left edge. Then there is a giant big eyed pink (?) bunny rabbit face staring over the top of the masked one. I think this is a rich piece. Really love the undefined softness of some of this but that is just me.

Re: WIP-help appreciated

Already some good ideas here,
I'll only add that I feel the yellow is too
concentrated in one area.
I agree with Smithers,,,10 artists, etc.
I'm sure you'll pull it together.
I've seen you do it.

Dave....crikey I love your imagination..I cant see that bunny..lord knows I've looked..LOL! I did a little today...but I was rushing it..so I will do a little tommorow, also the white circle doesnt quite fit in somehow..that needs to be a differant colour I think.
Wilsonart...today I pulled down more of that yellow to cover the pink at the bottom, but I am then going to put a wash over the whole of the yellow..what I dont like is the fact that I cant seem to see if I have done a good painting or not...sometimes they just scream Yes!..but more often than not I have to move it out of the studio upstairs and look at it for a few days, I wonder if everyone does the same...

Yes, I do. I have to remove the work totally
to another area to be objective about it.
I think it's sensory overload when it sits in the studio amid
everything else that's going on.
Eager to see some photos of the new.

Re: WIP-help appreciated

There's an effect of two slightly curved parallel lines or bars, one maybe to the left third, and the other pretty close to the right edge, both running vertically (squint if it isn't obvious) the kind of cause my attention to be split. I don't know if it would help to somehow break that cycle? I find if I turn my painting constantly while I work on it, to every side, I can see more what bothers me. But I also really like this.

Re: WIP-help appreciated

Wow! I just saw the woman with dark hair dressed in blue to the lower right of the painting. She seems to be gazing at something to the left.

The pink-salmon and turquoise are just a splendid combination. Katie this is very beautiful and striking painting.

For me, it helps to look at a painting in black and white so you can see the values.
