Stones in Dried Blood

Downtown Wandering Series, No.17
" Stones in Dried Blood " 8x10 oil,

The Civil War was a very important event in the South. Across from UTC there is a Confederate Cemetery.
I set two stones in a field awash with dried blood.

Sad times.

Also done in an "Expressionistic Realism" style- giving the essence of the tombstones but in a looser style, colors and lines are freer than Realism.
The original photos were only used to get a sense of shape.
Heavy texturing was done with dark green underpainting (does not show in photo, sorry...)

One of 20 completed for this semester, all using my own photos taken in downtown Chattanooga

C&C always appreciated

Re: Stones in Dried Blood

Sad that you paint 'only' in small-sizes (ie. 8x10) !??! ;-)

But you roll 'ExpressivRealism' in this forum!

Re: Stones in Dried Blood

Because of my restrictions in studio space at this point 8x10s are handy. I also have a lot of unused small canvasses, and I need to use them up with compositions suited for small sizes.

most of my work at this point will continue to be 16x20, until I get really comfortable.

Thanks for stopping in, greg
