At the beginning of this week, my friend, Ai, from Thailand was in the NY area, so we got together to sketch. I know her from WetCanvas and we met last year for the first time when she was in visiting relatives.
We met on Monday by the clock in Grand Central Terminal and then went downstairs and sketched a flower vendor.
Next we braved the elements and sat out in the cold to paint outside Grand Central. I painted the 42nd Street entrance to the terminal.

We were freezing by this time, so we headed indoors to sketch at the NY Public Library on 42nd St and 5th Avenue.
On Tuesday we met in NYC again. First we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We sketched in one of the sculpture gardens. I sketched in dry inktense pencil and added the water when I got home. The museum doesn't allow any wet art materials.
Our next stop was the Guggenheim Museum. When we finished looking at the artwork, we sat in the lobby to do a quick sketch of the ceiling and ramps.
Our last stop was in downtown Manhattan at the High Line Park. The park was built along an abandoned elevated train station and runs along the river. It was really pretty, but it was like sitting in a wind tunnel. We had to hold onto everything we had.
Here are both of us holding our sketches before we headed into Chelsea Market to warm up and have some coffee before we each went back home.
It was so much fun to sketch with Ai. She inspires me. She is brave enough to always sketch directly in ink or directly in watercolor and her paintings are wonderful. I enjoyed showing her parts of the city.
